SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- Former Speaker of the Virgin Islands (VI) House of Assembly (HoA) Mr Julian Willock has said many in the territory have been asking him to vie for political office and he is now contemplating same.

'We have a committee set up’- Willock

Speaking to Tahira Burke of Caribupdate News Service in an interview published on YouTube today, October 25, 2022, Mr Willock said persons have expressed to him that they believe he can make a meaningful contribution.

“I have not declared anything yet. As of today, I am a Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Member and I will continue to be that until things change. I am not predicting a change but one can never know in this political arena.

“So, I have not declared yet, but I will say-in terms of transparency-we have a committee set up and I have been listening keenly to their ideas,” Mr Willlock disclosed.

‘I have been on a quiet listening tour’

At the start of the interview, Mr Willock was asked what he has been up to in the wider VI community since giving up the post of Speaker.

“I have been doing some tours around the country, including to our sister islands, listening to the residents of the territory, in terms of what they want to see after the next general elections, their thoughts about the Commission of Inquiry, their hopes, their aspirations, their suffering, so I have been on a quiet listening tour.

“I have been able to gather a lot of information, that we need a new direction in the Virgin Islands,” Mr Willock shared.

‘Come with ideas & solutions’- Willock

The former Speaker and businessman also repeated what he had stated in previous interviews, that the next elections must be based on ideas, and solutions and not just criticisms.

“So, anybody coming before the people of this territory, the people of the Virgin Islands, ought to tell them how are they going to make their lives better. What are you going to do differently? How are you going to raise revenue? How are you going to scale back on some of those laws and regulations that have stifled growth? What are you going to do to ensure the private sector is properly facilitated?...so those are the things I want to hear,” Mr Willock said.

General elections in the Virgin Islands is constitutionally by the second quarter of 2023.

Campaigning has been low-key to non-existent since the Government of National Unity has not yet announced a date and the threat of suspension of the VI constitution by the colonial power, the United Kingdom, remains.

There is no future in standing against the UK but there is one in severance from the UK. Making a UN charter option choice is our future.

Mr. Julian Willock, former Speaker of the House of the last VIP administration, you will make a capable prospective candidate, if you decide to contest a seat a political leader. No past political leaders have, no present political leaders are, and no future political will be perfect. Your past mistakes are forever behind you.

At this time of our political experience, we are in need of better, much better governance. If your intention is to put the welbeing of the people of the BVI ahead of your personal interest. If you agree, then you are welcome with open arms.
Don't forget position that the position that you you desire to seek is bigger than you. Also, accept that the UK is presently the BVI political head. Wise negotiation with a stronger power is proof of good leadership.

    Note: expect discouragers. Fear not.

The problem is we have been recycling names too many times. The political arena, needs fresh blood. Fighting is not the only way to acquire peace. Sometimes diplomacy (talking to your oponent/ enemy) is the better way. Even then you may not get exactly what you want but it is better than war. It is obvious what most people prefer

What is truly very sad is the most of the people that are living in the BVI do not know what is or who will serve them better olitically, but if an ignorance, hardlly-known anything that they favour will agree to contest a seat in the next general election, they will gladly be willing, and will vote for him or her, if it benefit them, especially financially. Very sad, but most of us think with our eyes and preferred going forward walking or running backward. "If the blind be leaders of the blind, all will fall in a ditch.". If not, we will remain slaves to those that can see their way forward. But we are all not blind. Because of this truth better governance will become a reality. I am cencerely hoping for better governance sooner rather than later for the good of all our people, but first we must forgave others of their errors, and false, as have we, too.
