ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands now has enhanced connectivity following the decision by Caribbean Cellular Telephone (CCT) to officially launch the Territory’s first 5G network.

This marks a significant milestone, ushering the Virgin Islands into a new digital era characterised by faster speeds, lower latency, and greater reliability. 5G is poised to transform how residents live, work, and connect.

In a press release, CCT's CEO, Romney Averad Penn, stated, “The BVI deserves world-class technology, and today we’re proud to deliver it. 5G puts us on par with the most advanced markets in the world and opens the door to opportunities our community can embrace immediately,”.

The company addressed concerns about whether a market of this size could support next-generation technology, emphasising that CCT continues to forge ahead because the people of the VI deserve nothing less.

Penn praised this launch as a result of years of dedication from the CCT team and its partners, saying, “We didn’t wait for concessions or incentives. We invested because our customers matter, and we’re committed to delivering them the  very best.”

CCT urged policymakers and regulators to continue supporting the sector, noting that access to additional spectrum, consistent regulations, and investment-friendly policies will be critical to realizing the full potential of 5G.

CCT 'raising the bar'- Premier Wheatley

Premier Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) commended CCT’s commitment to serving the VI. “I congratulate CCT BVI on this monumental achievement. The introduction of 5G technology affirms CCT’s commitment to investing in a quality customer experience, raising the bar for the provision of services in the local telecommunications industry. I am hopeful that this move inspires greater investments in the excellence that the Virgin  Islands deserve.”

CCT’s 5G network coverage is expected to expand in the coming months. The company also announced that it has upgraded its entire 4G LTE network, which currently supports most customers, to facilitate the transition to 5G. CCT is collaborating closely with major manufacturers to ensure that 5G-enabled devices connect seamlessly to its network.

“This is about positioning the BVI for the future. We’re proud to lead the way, and we’re excited to see how our customers and community take advantage of what 5G makes possible,” Penn concluded.

The press release further stated that for everyday customers, 5G means smoother streaming, crystal-clear video calls, lightning-fast downloads, and the ability to connect more devices without slowdown. Device compatibility is crucial, and CCT is working closely with major manufacturers to ensure that 5G-enabled handsets can seamlessly connect to its network.

Is their service improved in fat hogs bay, I had them for a few years after Irma and every afternoon no internet at all it just buffering, the children couldn't even complete their online schooling during the pandemic time, everytime you called is someone will come check it until one of them said the traffic (internet) is busy in my area in the afternoon that's why this is happening. I paid for years for a service I never get. Thank God I made up my mind to pay a little more and joined flow and until today not one problem in my area.

Sounds like another gimmick. All this talk about 5G first you have to give us proper 4G cause what we are getting is 3G+ disguised as 4G
