World Cup Roundup
Japan beat Denmark 3-1.
Slovakia held off some late pressure to beat Italy 3-2 and sneak into second spot in Group F behind Paraguay, with the defending Champions, the Azzurri, finishing bottom of the group below New Zealand and going home early.
Hamsik, who plays his club football in Serie A with Napoli, told Sky Italia: “Nobody expected this. It’s an historic result and Italy were among the favourites.”
Italy coach Marcello Lippi, who led the side to success four years ago, says he is to blame for the performances in the tournament.
“I take all responsibility, because if a team arrives at such an important appointment as this with terror in their legs, heads and hearts, unable to express themselves, then it means the coach has not prepared the squad properly on any level,” he said.
New Zealand boss Ricki Herbert said he was delighted with his players after they exited the World Cup with three draws. One goal for the All Whites in the 0-0 draw with Paraguay would have been enough to see them progress but Herbert, who also manages A-League side Wellington Phoenix, was in positive mood after the match.
“I’m proud and disappointed at the same time,” said Herbert
Paraguay will now face Japan in the 2nd round and Slovakia will face the Netherlands.
Japan beat Denmark 3-1 to progress and Holland beat Cameroon 2-1
