Ms. Amey has been acting principal since 2009.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Going on three years, the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) still has an acting principal, which is mindboggling to some.

This is according to a caller on Tuesday May 3, 2011 radio programme “Speak Out BVI” hosted by Douglas Wheatley.

The caller wanted to know when the High School would have a confirmed Principal. Since 2009, Melissa Amey has been acting in the position.

“You have over 3,000 students and 100 plus teachers to monitor and you can’t flex your muscles because you are only acting and that sends a bad message,” the caller stated. “We need to know that our kids are protected by a master of the school.”

However, according to the caller the Ministry of Education should come to a decision soon because “it’s about time to give the rubber stamp to someone”.

“So you know when the master is in the house things run good. It is sad that Mr. Stoutt has to be home worrying many days …his name is there but his school has an acting Principal,” the caller added.

Ms. Amey, a teacher at the school since 2001, was named to the position of deputy principal effective December 1, 2008, and later acting principal, amid some controversies. Some claimed her appointment was political.

She has three assistants in the areas of academics, pastoral and discipline.

Efforts to contact education officials to shed some light on the issue were futile.

  1. jesus saves says:

The evils of her mother maybe falling on her!

    • 911 says:

goodness gracious..bossman let dem talk dat

    • Even if so says:

Even if that is true……she is doing a good job. What does one have to do with the other? Remember a caller made the comment not her. If I am correct, it was Animal who called. He has a comment on everything. Just leave the woman alone, she is doing more that the past principal and she is more of a people person than the other so called more qualifed.

  2. is this accurate says:

Is it an accurate statement that there are over 3,000 students at the school? If so then we really in desperate need of another school.

  3. school children says:

The job should be advertised and other people given an opportunity to apply. Not sure if this girl is ready for that job as school children reported she has the school divided already!

    • you a joke says:

She may not be the most qualified but she is doing the job. Not because she is not your friend. The school is making progress and she truly loves the children. You go sit down with that foolishness. GO Ms. Amy…..keep up the good work. the haters will always have something negative to say.

    • Truth says:

      The job was advertised.

  4. ReX FeraL says:

Guess the chickens are coming home to roost. There were more qualified persons than Ms. Amey who were for some reason passped over for the status quo. Nothing new in the Virgin Islands (B). Acting long yes, but is she doing a decent Job? The caller didn’t address that at all. Seems malicious to me in some instance.

  5. zeeeeeeeeeeeee says:

Please! why they focusing on she. What about the other five department heads acting for longer than she? Let’s be fair people.

  6. I'm Concern says:

I think that if one can act for such a long time then he/she is capable to be confirm in that position.

  7. Real Talk says:

Bring in a qualified expat! Give these local idiots something to cry about since they can’t seem to be pleased by anything that happens in this place! SICK OF THEM!

    • Stupps says:

Then leave and go back to your homeland where everthing is perfect and expats gets treated better than you and get away with showing you and your country no respect!

      • Real Talk says:

You all are so stupid and prove my point! My point is, we have a BVIslander who is given a chance to do a job and instead of supporting her and seeing if she’s capable of doing the job, we cut her down. Everytime a BVIslander is appointed to a Senior Post, we here all the bickering. The young woman who was recently appointed Magistrate, same thing! YET, when an expat is given a job, the SAME IDIOTS get a hissy fit talking about whether there aren’t any locals that could’ve gotten the job! SO, which is it? A local appointed, you all are UPSET, an expat gets it, you STILL UPSET!!!

Furthermore, I’m a BVIslander so I don’t know where you want me to go back to! The schools come under the Ministry of Education and they should bare the brunt of the blame for the ills associated with these schools. They need to build a PROPER technical and vocational school and stop brainwashing the children into all wanting to be doctors, lawyers and trust company workers. Telling the kids that trade classes are dumb and business classes are the smart ones! NO Principal can run a school on his/her own because they have to follow guidelines set out by the Ministry. THis is not an issue to bicker and moan about, this is our future! The point is, part of the biggest problem in the school especially with young men is that they learn differently and don’t want to be in that school. Many would like to be in a trade school where trade professions along with basic English, Math etc. are taught!

All this lip service for YEARS and nothing! I’m out of High School 15yrs now and been hearing the same stories since attending. Promises promises, NONSENSE!!!

  8. high places says:

well she will be confirm not to worry…… enough favors has been done!

  9. have to give the job to an american person – the bvi doesn’t have the talent required.

  10. people rotten!!!! says:

    leave the woman alone!!
she can do the job very well as most of u witness
man u people like sick dog that will bite the
flesh of it self if it can’t find anyone to bite on.
    what this world coming too!!!

  11. Sista says:

This is news too. Strupessss man!! I must agree with Real Talk who states, “Bring in a qualified expat! Give these local idiots something to cry about since they can’t seem to be pleased by anything that happens in this place! SICK OF THEM!” We live in a society where people hate to see locals move up the ladder.

  12. Just Sayin' says:

Advertise the Job again!!! She should not even be there.

  13. live life says:

Fair is fair they run out of the school the person who should have been the principal but god does not sleep….

  14. Exploration says:

It is shameful and embarrasing that the Minister of Education has allowed this to continue for so long. When we are at a place where the standard of education needs to be raised in this country; the mere fact that a decision cannot and has not been made is embarrasing. How are other decisions being made in the best interest of students who are the future leaders of this country?

  15. south sea says:

Another political appointment not based on ability but who knows who.

  16. bvislander says:

I do not normally comment on these sites, but thought I would encourage Ms Amey especially and the commentors too, in the Lord. Life is full of problems, and we need to deal with them. But if we aren’t careful, all we see are the problems. There are lots of good things we can focus on. Instead of “catching people being bad,” catch them being good. Make your words a fountain of life. Be a positive person. Encourage one another. Ask God to help you develop a positive thought life. Immerse yourself in his Word. Pray. Over time, you will discover that you can control the way you think, choosing to focus on some thoughts and to reject others. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if any-thing is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things (Philippians 4:8). Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing (1 Thessalonians 5:11). Ms Amey, I know that you are doing a good job with those children, especially since I am at the high school all the time and can see how your very presence commands respect from them. You, and all the other principals are doing the jobs of the parents and doing a good job too. Ms Amey, trust in the Lord and he will strengthen your path, pray and when you get tired praying, pray some more. Whatever the enemy has planned for evil, God will turn it around for the good. God will not leave you nor forsake you – he promise that no good thing will he withhold from those who diligently serve and seek his face. I DECLARE THAT NO WEAPONS FORMED AGAINST YOU SHALL PROSPER AND EVERY TONGUE THAT RISES UP AGAINST YOU IN JUDGEMENT SHALL BE CONDEMNED. Hold onto the promises of God and continue to help our children the best you know how!

  17. Brad Boynes says:

Ms. Amey.. Do what you have to do with what you have. God WILL take care of you and the negative bloggers too. That’s how great He is. Get Up, Stand Up, Chin Up.

    • Not Ready says:

I personally know Ms.Amey is not ready for the job, she is also very unprofessional one needs to be a fly on the wall ans see and hear what goes on then you can decide. A true dictator.

  18. Looking out for the students says:

Whether or not Ms. Aimey is confirmed to the post should not depend on her name or place of birth , but rather on how well she has carried out the following responsibilities:

Provided vision and professional leadership appropriate to the needs of the
students, the strengths of the staff in accordance with the Ministry of Education requirements and community needs

Provided Management of the school that is clear in its organisation and purposeful in direction

Provided manage all school personnel policies, procedures and practices

How well she fostered and developed relationships between the school and its community

Provided management of the financial and asset resources of the school in accordance with
    school policies

Ensure, along with the Ministry of Education , compliance with relevant statutes and regulations
