PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — Trinidad and Tobago’s leader is advising the gas-rich Caribbean country’s president to dissolve Parliament, a requisite step before calling early elections.
Prime Minister Patrick Manning made the announcement on Thursday. He is expected to set a national election date soon after receiving the president’s agreement to dissolve Parliament at midnight to clear the way for the vote.
Last month, Manning announced candidate screening would begin this week, a sign he was close to calling early elections.
Elections in Trinidad are not constitutionally due until 2013.
Manning’s People’s National Movement holds 26 of the 41 seats in Parliament, with the 15 remaining held by the opposition United National Congress.
