Tortola Crowned LIME VI BD Basketball Champions 2011.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Thanks to MVP Jomoiri Dagou and a massive 3rd quarter, the boys from Tortola secured victory over three-time Champions St Croix in the LIME V.I. BD Basketball championship game on Saturday June 25, 2011.

In front of a good sized crowd, the two teams had played out a cagey, nervous first half, with the teams going into the break at 11-9 in Tortola’s favour. Then came the explosive 3rd quarter, during which Tortola burst into life, outscoring St Croix by 13 points to lead 32-18.

The period started with a quick exchange of 2 pointers. Then Terrique Wattley started to open the gap with a 3 pointer fade away jumper from outside deep right. St Croix’s Ismael Carino had a chance to reduce the arrears, but missed with his second free throw from the foul line and had to watch as the rebound was stolen by Tortola and Jomoiri Dagou raced down the other end to score to make it 21-13 to Tortola.

As play transitioned from end to end, Jahkiebo Joseph nailed a 3, but Tortola responded immediately. Wattley drew a foul driving into the paint, scored from the first, missed the second, but D’Moi N’Hodge was on hand to splash the rebound to bring the crowd to their feet.

Wattley and Dagou were a constant thorn in St Croix’s side and the two combined again for another Dagou 2 pointer before the dramatic and game turning quarter came to a close with Jachoy Walwyn scoring a 3 pointer as the buzzer sounded.

The 4th quarter started a little scrappy as St Croix sought their way back into the game.

Samuel Williams fumbled, N’Hodge picked up the lose ball only to be penalized for travelling and Joseph then dribbled in to score for St Croix.

Jasin Rymer Jnr. blocked a shot by Jakheel Stevens, but Dagou failed to capitalize seeing his attempted pass across court cut out by Zion Jones. The St Croix possession broke down again for travelling and Tortola’s Walwyn scored at the other end to bring to a close a frenetic 2 minute period.

With just under 3 minutes left, Tahj Malone announced himself to the crowd with a huge dunk right in front of the vociferous home supporters and the wind was finally taken out of St Croix’s sails.

Playing for time, Tortola passed the ball around and kept possession. Fittingly though, there was time for Wattley and Dagou to combine for two more scores to round off a superb night’s work.

Jomoiri Dagou finished with 13 points becoming the Tournament’s top scorer, but more importantly, he secure the Title for Tortola.

He was quick to thank Wattley, without whom he couldn’t have got all the opportunities under the basket. Wattley also scored 11 points.

St Thomas finished 3rd with a 26-18 win over the BVI All Star team. Devaugn Todman Junior scored 8 points for St Thomas. Kedrick Matthew led the All Stars scoring with 10.
