ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The $3M loan to the BVI Tourist Board (BVITB) in 2010 by the Ports Authority is being repaid from funds accumulated from passengers’ taxes.

In an exclusive interview with VINO this afternoon August 20, Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority Vincent O’Neal said, “The monies collected go directly to our account”.

Prior to that arrangement, the Ports Authority only received 50 percent of the revenue that Government collected on its behalf, but since the loan the Ports Authority gets everything.

“So I can safely say we are being repaid, which began in August 2010,” Mr. O’Neal added.

Passenger taxes range from $5 to $20.

In May 2010, it was revealed in the Standing Finance Committee report that Premier Ralph T. O’Neal, who also holds the portfolio of Tourism Minister, asked the Ports Authority to advance $3M to the BVITB in an effort to shave off a $6.1M debt it had incurred.

The Ports Authority falls under the Premier’s Office.
