ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Noting that the Territory has come a long way with the offering and development of Technical Vocational Education, Minister for Education and Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn believes a considerable amount of work still needs to be done.
As a result, the Minister has set up a nine-member steering committee to look at the concerns and assess the present situation before making recommendations on a national position on technical vocational education training. The committee will be chaired by Colin O’Neal.
“Aiming towards the macro goal of the Virgin Islands Education System producing students who are ready to enter higher learning institutions for knowledge and skills development in technical and vocational disciplines as well as preparing those who are desirous of developing skills for the world of work, it is important Madam Speaker that the Government take a decision on technical vocational education and training to ensure a common understanding of our intent,” Hon. Walwyn stated during a statement in the House of Assembly (HOA) on December 19, 2011.
According to him, society needs to get rid of the stigma that has become attached to the technical and vocational fields, “and we have to ensure that our community changes its attitude to these disciplines”.
“The thinking Madam Speaker that it is an area for so-called weak or not so smart students must come to an end and as the Minister of Education, I will spearhead the campaign against that train of thought. A first step in moving forward is to understand where we are and to understand the thinking of our society,” Hon. Walwyn disclosed.
He added when the Ministry knows exactly where its stands, a national policy will be developed and funded by UNESCO.
