Special Olympians sail to success!
Lenroy and Delroy at the finish.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – As the Virgin Islands sailors continue to shine at the Summer Games in Athens, Greece, Head Coach, Allison Knights Bramble has been able to send an update courtesy of her Blackberry and Digicel.
Tuesday was the last day of divisions and Knights Bramble and the team had to wait patiently for racing to begin.
“We spent a fair amount of today hanging around waiting for wind to fill in and settle down. Jaye Noele and Akeem David were due to sail first and they finally got a race in just before lunch. It was fluky and light conditions that always taxes the boys – and of course suits the Europeans. Sure enough, the Greeks and the Austrians seemed to wake up and Jaye did well to hold his two finishes of 6th and 5th in the second race. This places them in 4th overall at the end of the divisioning round. In fact, he has the same number of points as the third placed Austrian boat, so a tiebreaker rule had to be used to split them.”
The day was not without its drawbacks though as the Dream Team of Glen and Len suffered a disqualification, as Knights Bramble explained
“Eventually (as Manuel would say), the other two teams hit the water just as the breeze shifted massively then filled in to around 15 – 18 kts! Great for Glen and Elsa and ‘The Dream Team’! Two races for them – Glen and Elsa took a second in first race and third in last race of the day. The Dream Team a third in race number one and an unfortunate DNF in last. DNF stands for “did not finish”. This was a bit of a slip on the part of Delroy and Len as they clean forgot that they are not allowed to pass through the start / finish line during race! I guess they were dreaming (haha!)”.
“Final scores are not out at the time of going to press for these classes, so it’s only provisional for now. The scores we published yesterday in fact were changed by this morning and Glen and Elsa were pushed up into second – not third!
We will have divisioned fleets by tomorrow – meaning that they will still sail in same groups, but be scored separately, according to ability. This is a fundamental rule of Special Olympics, so I better keep quiet about my opinion on how it works in sailing..!
Everyone is fine; no issues. We are looking forward to getting some clean laundry tonight – I think the boys have run out of boxers! So just in the nick of time!!”
