Ryan Alfred can’t stem the tide as BVI beaten at Centro Baskets
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Despite being the games top scorer, the BVI’s Ryan Alfred could do little to stop the onslaught from the Dominican Republic in yesterday’s August 5, 2011 , 95-54 defeat at the U17 Centro Baskets Championships in Puerto Rico.
Alfred was on court for all but 7 minutes of what became a dominating display by the Dominican Rep. team. He scored 22 points with 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 assist in a losing battle. Alfred notched 41% of 2 pointers, but was less successful with his 3 point shots, recording just 1 from 7.
The only other BVI player to get double digit points was Shakiel Humphrey who found his 3 point range going 4 from 9 on his way to 16 points.
Overall, the BVI was out rebounded 18 – 59 and only scored 25% from the field. They hit 32% of 3 pointers and 53% of free throws.
The Dominican Republic was led by Oscar Asier Cabrera and Brandone Edward Francis Ramirez, who both scored 18 points each.
The score at the 1st quarter was 21-11 and the Dominican Rep. increased their lead to 15 points, going into half time with the scores 42-27. The 3rd quarter was a disaster for the BVI as they could only score 7 points, whilst conceding 30. The free scoring Dominicans effectively killed the game off during that frenetic 10 minute period, but the BVI will take heart from the 4th when they scored 20 points to Dominica’s 24.
