ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is clamping down on officers with “loose lips”, and anyone caught giving unauthorised information to the media fraternity or anyone else could end up without a job.

This is according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), David Morris in a recent interview with Virgin Islands News Online.

Morris, who has been in the post since March 2010, had pledged to get a grip on officers leaking information to the public even before relatives were informed, as well as, to ensure the integrity of an investigation was maintained.

“When victims and witnesses report crime to us the last thing they expect is for it to appear on the news unofficially,” Morris explained.

“Internally we have clamped down on the discipline issues, making quite clear to officers that they are in breach of discipline and they can lose their jobs. In some cases of trust in public office they can be prosecuted for it…we are monitoring the situation,” he added.

The DCP also noted that the Governor’s Speech from the Throne indicated that legislations will be introduced for Freedom of Speech and Information Protection, which is similar to the Data Protection Act in the United Kingdom.
According to him, the Data Protection Act states that if an officer gives out information that is not authorised that officer could be penalised or jailed.

Some will criticize, but you do what you gotta do, the slackness of government officers on a whole should be addressed. Another thing, I need to talk to Action Man about expats holding simple position in our government when those positions could be filled by high school student. A lot of that is going on in you ministry Mark. WE NEED TO CLEAN DEM OUT!!!

  2. Edmund says:

what the hell is wrong with this guy from the UK??? you mean to tell me people cannot speak out against wrong doing? Morris thinks this is south africa???? i cry for my country deman

    • Discrete says:

That is what gets you in trouble, he is simply saying which you should have a degree of understanding that when something happens any officer just don’t go and leak it. It has seniors above who will know when to speak to the public.

    • Peaches says:

U a real fool, do you understand what he is saying? I have had friends who make reports for domestic abuse, before the day out, people can call them asking them what happen, they talk too much. One police waited until 4:00 am in the morning to call my friend to ask her what the problem was, actually wake her out of her sleep. I guess he had just gone through the report logs and couldn’t wait until mornin.

      • billy b says:

@peaches. Don’t worry wid dem. You could tell they have no clue what professionalism is. They dont’ realize that certain leaks can potentially cause people their lives, bunch au morons they are

    • Jog says:

  4. @billy b says:

How about this…U go to college or any university and get the degree then come back to YOUR country and fill the position!

  5. LAY OFF says:

hey you all lay off Morris I know this man is doing his best to protect his fellow officers who dont leak information and also to protect the public. Police talks to darn much ..Morris get rid of the Undesirables before they make others get hurt……..chatter bats. Morris you seems to be onto to them keep it going. As always you are doing a great job…dont mind the undesirables get rid of them.

  6. WEBBFEET says:

No, Morris don’t want police officers to speak about what is going on and he is using the guise of leaking information about cases. This man is on an agenda to bring havoc in the force, but before that happen, we force he out. Let Barrywebbfeet tell he how the story does go in the BVI. Bunch of snakes coming here with their hidden agendas.

  7. Hmm says:

He is right. The RVIPF could be sued from victims for leaking information. Fire them.

  8. Brap says:

Mr. Morris these crooked cops do this for several reasons: to gain alliances, to maintain alliances, to gain favors and even earn money. These are a few of the many reasons I do not trust police or have respect for them. They would try to solicit their respect to me…!!!

  9. tell the truth says:

the truth tis who chat more than dem UK officers when they are drunk???? now smoke dat David Morris!!!!

  10. cant stand ignorance says:

the media needs to be charged as well the police wont talk if no one would listen… simple

  11. Anegada says:

While you are “clamping down on talkative officers” ,do you think you could take some time out to clamp down on the Noise Pollution here on Anegada? It is disgusting now when music is being played at the Highest Volumes on Sunday Nights and carry on until 3 or 4 AM Monday Mornings.

  12. .....splay says:

I agree that officers who snitches should be prosecuted we gotta be mindful that there are those who has ulterior motives on the matter, where they wishes to muzzle persons who speak out about the inequalities that goes on within the force. Also bear in mind that the info in not only preveledge to officers alone. Hopefully everyone employed at or with the organization will face the same penalty as the officers. The police swore to upholds the laws of the BVI an obligation that must be kept. What does the civilians swore to do is my little question. And will the UK officers be subject to this law and who will be so brave to investigate much less report it to the Governor.

  13. Star says:

What the DCP needs to concentrate on next is actually making the officers go out and investigate complaints. Some of these officers refuse to do what they have to do and are so boldface about it that when you call to check on their progress, they let you know that it was some other officer’s responsibility and nothing gets done because they all play the blame game instead of getting the job done.

  14. Quiet Storm says:

Where is Waldo? Where is the Comish? Comish, please lead from the front. You are the dejure leader but the Decomish is acting as the defacto leader. The Comish role is to lead from the front and be the face of the RVIPD. The Comish has a moral obligation to represent himself and the people of the BVI and not play second fiddle to anyone. If he cannot do this proudly, competently, unashamedly, and confidently, he needs to exit stage right into the sunset. We do not need a figure head; we need a true leader. As they say either do your thing or get off the Poe

Loose lips sink ships! As such I strongly support a disciplined and professional force. The fact that the force is leaking like a sieve says that the force is undisciplined and fragmented. A sight challenged person can clearly see that the RVIPD is split among locals, regional expats, and UK expats. It is a dysfunctional force that may be putting the safety of citizens at risk. The Comish needs to bring some unity, pride, professionalism, and synergy to the force. The DCP has a key role but the Comish has to be the leader.
