ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The main thorough-fare into the Purcell Estate community is likely to become accessible again by week-end as the Ministry of Communications and Works has begun to cover up the pipes, which were exposed for several months.

Virgin Islands News Online cameras captured images of men busy at work yesterday afternoon, Tuesday December 2011. Works Minister, Hon. Mark Vanterpool was also on the scene examining the progress.

The Johnson/Purcell Ghut Development Project was implemented to improve drainage, prevent flooding and ease traffic congestion in the Johnson’s Ghut and Purcell Estate areas. Its execution has been implemented in various phases since its inception in 2008.

During the House of Assembly (HOA) sitting on Monday, Hon. Vanterpool disclosed that “Every effort is being made to temporarily accommodate some vehicular traffic over the busy Christmas holiday period particularly for the residents and businesses that have been inconvenienced over the last several months.”

With regards to the project, the Minister stated that while it may be difficult at “this stage to reverse some of the executed works due to a number of challenges”, the Public Works Department (PWD) has put forward recommendations to mitigate the impacts of flooding in the Johnson’s Ghut watershed.

This includes the installation of proper drainage solutions in critical areas; the alteration of entrance and exit slopes of the existing sediment traps in the paved drainage channel and the construction of check dams along strategic locations.

According to him, the execution of the mitigation measures will occur over the short to long terms, but in the meantime, works have resumed on the project site.

The pipes will be covered temporarily until the Ministry and PWD can determine the best way to complete the project. Photo: Aneka Edwards/VINO

mek sure you make PWD check these drains on a regular basis to prevent clogging in critical weather conditions. It got work around here to do but the road crew rather hang out in the local bars

Well at least the Minister lived up to his promise.

where is the 6th district rep in all this????no where to be found

    • small head says:

She where she always tis selling food under a tent

    • HELLO!!! says:

Point of information. The 6th district rep has been on the job. I saw her there most of the day Saturday and the mornings early or afternoons late. Allu so negative it makes me sick. If you were by the ghut you would see her but guess what? you were never there. You just relay on hearsay. As for the blogger with the food comment, she and her husband has workers that get paid to sell their food under the tent. Again, if you were under the tent you would notice the rep is never there and has not been there selling for over a year now. At least she is making an honest living, what are you doing honestly? Yes, I can talk that for I know. Learn to listen with your own ears and watch with your own eyes.
