Premier hopeful new FS for Tourist Board will be hired from VI
The BVI Tourist Board has been without a Financial Secretary since January 2011.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The BVI Tourist Board has been without a Financial Secretary since earlier this year and Premier Ralph T. O’Neal is hopeful that a suitable candidate from the Virgin Islands (VI) will fill the post as soon as possible.
He was at the time responding to a question posed by Leader of the Opposition, Dr. D. Orlando Smith on the current accounting system at the Board during the House of Assembly (HOA) sitting today Tuesday August 29, 2011.
Commenting on the difficulty to recruit someone for the high profile job, Premier O’Neal who also holds the Tourism Minister portfolio, admitted, “it is very difficult to find someone because the people who are qualified Government can’t pay them …we are hopeful we will soon find someone. I would hate to have to recruit someone from overseas”.
Meanwhile, he said in the interim a system has been put in place to ensure accountability. “Provisions have been put in place where the financial department will report directly to the director [Hadassah Ward],” Premier O’Neal told the House.
When asked by Dr. Smith if it was a hasty decision to allow the former FS to leave without getting a replacement, Hon. O’Neal disclosed he had approached a young University of the Virgin Islands graduate who had a vast knowledge of Accounting.
“He promised to consider it… the next time I heard from him he got a job in the private sector. I don’t think the TB would be at any risk [until someone is hired],” the Premier assured.

Mr. Premier – do you mean to say that you don’t want to pay qualified BVIslanders, but you’d recruit someone from overseas for less?
It’s all very interesting to me really. I am a BVIslander and I applied for this position many months ago. I am confident my experience and education speak for themselves; but I have yet to receive a letter from the TB acknowledging my application and/or letting me know that I do not meet the qualifications. I am not sure what the salary range for the position is but it would have been nice to be given the opportunity to interview…unless, that is not the process in the BVI?
ndp going to bring in a phillipino to do this job, if they get in….if you dont believe me ask mark
