ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Sixteen years later, after running against current second district representative Alvin Christopher and losing to him, Leall Rymer of Cane Garden Bay is ready to give it another shot.

At a community meeting held last evening Saturday April 2, at the Cane Garden Bay Community Centre, Rymer disclosed his intentions to contest the Second district seat and said he would officially launch his campaign April month end or early May.

“I think this is a good time to run because the young people need help, the Second District needs help, we have our roads and many other issues that need urgent attention, we need someone to care about the second district. I think we need to put a new face in this second district, so I am coming and hoping I can win this election so we can save the second district,” Mr. Rymer told VINO in an exclusive interview last evening after his meeting.

During his short meeting, which was attended by a small group of residents, Mr. Rymer, owner of Baby Bull Water Sports of Cane Garden Bay, stressed heavily on his lack of much formal education but made it clear that he has enough “common sense” to do the job and willing to listen to the people to take their issues forward and make a difference.

“I am not going in with a lot of education but I am going in with honesty, common sense and respect for the people of the Second District,” Rymer said.

“I read and write, but not as good as I should. In those days my parents were low on funds then they adopted a boy and I had to go earlier than most kids did. But I will not change that for the world and I am proud of my sisters, brothers, nephews and nieces and who I took care of,” the businessman said proudly.

He further told VINO that “A lot of people have this book sense but they have no common sense. I am quite comfortable with my common sense and respect and love for the people. There are a lot of people that have education but have no respect for the people, no common sense and do what is wrong from right.”

Mr. Rymer said he was also willing to listen and learn from those more educated than him.

Asked what the main issues he would address if elected, Mr. Rymer said if the roads are in the condition they are currently in, that would be his first priority. However, he said serious attention would also be given to address the water that runs from Mayaba to Ross Hill. He recommends installing two drains at the ghut, which woukd stop the water from reaching the bottom of the hill.

He said he would also give equal attention to the issues affecting Brewers Bay and Jost van Dyke but would first meet with the people in those areas to find out what were their priorities. Rymer pointed out that JVD seems to be forgotten as the residents there are not included in plans for their island, something that he would change if elected.

The new candidate plans to visit those areas very soon as part of his campaign to understand the issues that are affecting them. He also plans to step of his campaign with house to house visits and to ensure residents of the second district are informed and kept abreast of his plans for the district.

Mr. Rymer also made it known that, though he is not highly literate, education of all the youths would also be a key priority for him.

Meanwhile, the businessman said he would like to win the election but if he doesn’t he would like to see whoever wins it to have a different attitude towards the second district and to address the many concerns that have been plaguing residents of his district over the years.

Mr. Rymer now joins Claude Skelton Cline who recently declared his candidacy, and incumbent J. Alvin Christopher, in the race for the Second District seat.
