CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) — An Internal Revenue Service worker in the U.S. Virgin Islands has been charged with defrauding the federal government of more than $100,000 by filing nearly three dozen false tax returns.
Colette Browne and her husband, Leroy Browne, face charges including embezzlement, forgery and identity theft in an alleged scheme that police say began in 2003 and lasted three years.
Police say Colette Browne filed 32 false tax returns under the names of friends and family, including her husband.
It is unclear if the Brownes have a lawyer.
The couple was arrested Monday and are scheduled to appear in court March 18.
