Ernesto McClean, the 25 year-old convicted Scotiabank burglar was released from Peebles Hospital last week after a lengthy mental assessment from medical professionals.

Virgin Islands News Online acquired information from a reliable source, that McClean is “in good stable condition and has caused no trouble at the prison since he was released from Peebles Hospital.”

Many concerned Virgin Islanders raised the question as to whether McClean’s time in hospital would serve as part of his seven year sentence for the robbery of Scotiabank. Authorities confirmed that “McClean’s hospital time was indeed part of his sentence in accordance with the law, since he was under guard at all times.”

Before the day of his sentencing over a month ago, McClean had shown questionable behaviour, first, by his attempts to provoke a police officer with taunts, and second,  in the prison where he was described by officers as badly behaved and cursing.

Authorities suspected that McClean was fabricating his mental illness to stay out of prison when a source described that “The general consensus among the authorities, as in prison officers and police personnel, is that he’s pretending to be mentally ill, because he does not want to serve his sentence. When he was incarcerated before, he acted in the same manner, exhibiting the same misbehaviour.”

On Thursday, March 25 2010, McClean was sentenced to seven years in prison after he was found guilty of the June 12 2007 robbery of over $300,000 from Scotia Bank.

On April 03 2010, McClean was rushed from prison to Peebles hospital for harming himself. The injuries were not severe, but he was kept at the hospital for mental evaluation till last week.

In hospital, McClean persisted with a torrent of serious verbal abuse against hospital staff, which prompted them to keep him for further mental evaluation.

Authorities stated that although they were unaware of the questions McClean was facing in his mental assessment, they centred on analysing his state of mind and whether he was fit to return to prison.

McClean is currently in prison, serving his seven year sentence.
