ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – VINO was the first to report on the big horse races scheduled for this Sunday April 17, 2011 at Tortola’s Ellis Thomas Downs.

According to Derrick ‘Aruba’ Marshall, President of the BVI Horse Owners’ Association in an exclusive interview with VINO, “all is set and ready to go for this Sunday and we are expecting a huge turn out to our traditional Easter races”.

With well over 12 horses from St. Thomas, USVI confirmed on the race card, six exciting and competitive races and the return of Lake Texoma to Ellis Thomas Downs, it’s going to be a Sunday of excitement, fund and much anticipation.

Word from the stables at Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay, on the main island of Tortola is that all race horses are ready and geared up for the stiff competition coming their way from the St. Thomas/St. John Horse Owners. The Tortola horses are confident that, “they will clean up on Sunday”, according to one enthusiastic trainer.

This Sunday’s races are another warm-up for the St. Thomas Carnival Races which will be held on Friday May 6, 2011 at the Clinton E. Phipps racetrack.

In the 7 furlong fourth race, Tortola’s Glorious Memory who  has won two consecutive races will have to defend herself to see if she can make it a three in a row. Tortola’s Tiger’s Mischief who is also in that race is back to redeem herself as the best mare in the Territory.

Again? Lawd-a-mussy, as dem poor old horses aint sick enough they putting them to run again. They need to catch their breath from the last time as they barely made it round the track and then got seasick coming back fom St.Thomas. This cruelty has to stop – would you put your granny to run round the track in town infront of a handful of drunken spectators? I am guessing its no.

C’mon peeps of the BVI we need to turn this facility into a more worthwhile one. I have suggested many times that we could build a first class cricket ground. Imagine the excitement if we invited the Indian team who just won the world cup to play against the BVI Polive cricket team – man that would be excitment cant done.

    • Fool Johnny says:

For heaven sake Johhny, go home to your country to play or watch cricket. It is not a a local sport, we don’t like, it dumb and boring! We like our horse race, basketball, softball etc. No soccer or cricket, go back where you come from bur cricket grounds….lol

      • Johnny says:

Who you calling a fool? You need to do some research, the late Cyril Romney was a keen cricket fan, Tilford was a big cricket fan (in my opinion though he must have been an umpire as they dont move too much) and if you read the news this week you would have seen that Juggy was bowling cricket – so you are wrong. BVIslanders love cricket, its in there blood.

Horse race a dead sport, nuff said on that, basketball is like watching tennis but with a few bounces in between and who the backside watches softball anymore??? C’mon get real. You got to get hip and go for the new sports, Cricket, BMX, Skateboarding, Kiteboarding and dominoes.
