ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – With tuition fees hike looming for Virgin Islanders studying in the United Kingdom (UK) next year, Government will have to make the necessary adjustments to assist the students.
Director of the BVI London Office, Kedrick Malone, made this disclosure during a press conference last Friday, August 5.
“The Premier met with the students last November and their concerns were conveyed to him…he understood that the requisite adjustments will have to be made in scholarship programmes because of the increased fees,” Mr. Malone told journalists.
He said that his office’s role is to ensure that the students are comfortable.
The UK’s Members of Parliament (MPs) voted in December to allow fees for UK students on undergraduate courses to rise from £3,350 a year to £6,000, and £9,000 in “exceptional cases.” But ministers assumed that universities would charge different levels of fees and that the average, across more than 130 institutions, would be £7,500.
New vision and new mission
The BVI London Office, which opened in 2002, now has a new vision, mission and tag line, Mr. Malone divulged.
“The vision is to be the recognised leader in the representation of the British Virgin Islands in the UK and Europe…the mission is to advance BVI interest in the UK and Europe,” the director further stated.
The tagline is – “serving the interest of the BVI”.
As for the plans for 2012, Mr. Malone disclosed that strengthening the links between the BVI London Office and the Premier’s Office and ministries are top on the list. Others include increasing the office’s information flow into the Territory; widening links and the relationship between Government and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs); revamping the office’s internal systems and increasing resources in the Virgin Islands (VI).

The new tuition is not going to affect those students who are already studying only those registering next year. The students already there will continue paying their lower fees. What Kedrick Malone need to introduce to the BVI government as a way to help more students who want to go to the UK to study is the same kind of tuition plan that the UK government offers. Everyone should be able to get a scholarship without being bound hand and foot to having to work for government when they return. There should be a plan in place to allow those who can get jobs in the private sector to pay back the government, or government could garnish their wages. This would surely open more opportunities for more students to get qualified to fill top positions in the Territory.
