Several homes were flooded and items damaged during the flood which struck the island last week.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The People’s Progressive Movement in partnership with the Social Development Department and The BVI Red Cross will be hosting a TV telethon this evening Monday October 18, 2010 to raise funds for victims of the recent floods that struck a week ago.

According to a press release received from the PPM, it states that families in some cases have lost everything and it is the organisation’s desire to mobilise the community to support BVI families and neighbours in rebuilding their lives in whatever way possible.

The telethon will be broadcast live on JTV Channel 55 from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. tonight on and the goal is to raise $100,000, the release states.

Local cellular phone companies have agreed to provide texting for one week from Monday where persons can text a specific number and make a donation to the relief effort. Information on this will be provided on the night of the telethon.

The Executive Director of the PPM, Mr. Neville Smith indicated that members were excited to put forward this initiative that was in keeping with its principles of community service and ‘it takes a village’ philosophy. He shared that it is important for us as a community to take care of itself by looking out for one another, especially in times of hardship.

Persons wishing to get involved and for more information can  contact Past Executive Director, Mr. Cromwell Smith at 499-1328 or email PPM at bvippm@gmail.com.
