Flash Flood Warning issued until 5 p.m.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Flash Flood Warning has been issued for the Virgin Islands until 5 P.M today October 8, 2010.
A Flash Flood Warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring in the warned area. A flash flood is a sudden, violent flood after a heavy rain. Rainfall intensity and duration, topography, soil conditions, and ground cover contribute to flash flooding.
In the Department of Disaster Management 2 p.m. update, it states that a cluster of thunderstorms approaching from the south is presently affecting the local area.
The Virgin Islands has been experiencing torrential rain for the past few days. One of the DDM Weather Stations at MacNamara collected 20.05 inches of rain over the last three days. This is significant rainfall when compared to the same rainfall amounts that fell over a two week period in November 2003.
Residents and visitors are reminded to continue to EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION on roadways as some of them are extremely dangerous to drive on. The Territory remains under a State of Emergency.
