First 100 days of the NDP

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Today, February 15, 2012 marks the first 100 days of the National Democratic Party (NDP) in Government and during the period of the party being elected on November 7, 2011 to date – all eyes have been watching closely with some political pundits were expecting miracles while others were predicting failures.
Two days after the election, November 9, 2011, Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith and his Ministers were sworn into office to get the ball rolling. Dr. Kedrick Pickering was named Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour; Ronnie Skelton, Minister for Health and Social Development, Mark Vanterpool, Minister for Communications and Works and Myron Walwyn, Minister for Education and Culture.
Against this backdrop, Virgin Islands News Online took to the streets and asked members of the public what were their views on Government’s performance so far. Here is what they had to say!
C. Dawson: I believe we should never be swayed by what happens the first 100 days for any Government because they try their best to make people believe they are for the people. When residents become comfortable, the Government becomes complacent and just do their own thing. So ask me that question in another three and a half years and then I can give you a proper answer.
Kip Nisbet: That’s an interesting question. I think they are doing well to an extent but they could have done more within the 100 days but since that did not happen I guess I will have to see what the next 100 days bring.
Sabrina Hemraj: So far this Government is living up to the promises they made during the campaign trail. I think it was smart of them to tackle the most difficult ones first like trying lower the cost of living which is a phenomenal task, and lower the freight which it seems was not as complicated as it was said to be. The whole labour issue is very interesting and that could lead to some problems down the road but at least they are not waiting until the last year to deal with that. Hmmm I guess they have really learnt their lesson from the last time and are reaching out to the people.
L. Smith: I am impressed that they are trying to lower the Customs tax, and as a taxi driver I see that they fixed a couple of roads like the one in Cane Garden Bay. Also while they are saying we are broke I am still seeing them trying to fix the parking lot by the hospital. I was very happy to hear that the sewerage in Road Town is gonna be fixed soon.
John. S: I have not really been keeping up with the politics…I keep hearing they are doing a darn good job but then again the people who are saying that are NDP supporters.
J. Vanterpool: The NDP’s first 100 days is just a fluke because most of the projects that they are getting praises for are continuation of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP). If many of us remove the blinders, they will see.
A. Creque: NDP all the way. I must congratulate Dr. Smith and his team for returning stronger than ever. He has a vibrant team and I must say I am pleased with how they are tackling unemployment for the youths and the labour issues. Kudos to them for the first 100 days and I believe it will only get better.
