ADMIN COMPLEX - Lorie Rymer is implying that civil servants are still leaking confidential Government information.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The question as to whether civil servants are leaking confidential Government information has once again resurfaced, but this time it was hinted by a political candidate during one of his political meetings.

Lorie Rymer, who was speaking at a community meeting on Virgin Gorda at the Ashford Walters Community Centre on Saturday April 30, 2011 made reference of the document that was signed by Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Hon. Omar Hodge for the importation of Lemurs to Necker Island which he had obtained, but also revealed other scenarios of how he obtained “confidential” Government information.

Regarding the document signed to authorize importation of the Lemurs, Mr. Rymer claims that he has a copy of the permit signed by the Minister. “… and I have a copy of it and that is why when he first came out on the radio, Mr. O’Neal (Premier Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal OBE) said I was spreading rumours and so on but then they understood I had the document that Mr. Omar Hodge signed … and Omar Hodge said yes its true and he came on the radio and say yes I did sign it,” Mr. Rymer said to residents who turned up at the community meeting.

Lorie Rymer is contesting the 9th electoral district in the upcoming general election.

He further revealed that, “Because people show things and people tell you things and I will never ever reveal the identity of those persons, any trouble that will come must come to me alone.”

“People come to me and they say ok we know that you have some questions about this document here, we can’t show you this document, but they showing it to me, we can’t show you that, you see that there, we cannot show you so and so this is confidential stuff but this is the Government business, how would you expect us to be able to tell you that, we can’t tell you that. By the time they are finished, I have all the information I need,” the ninth district candidate further stated.

Mr. Rymer’s comments came on the heels of the leak of a diplomatic mail addressed to the Premier Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal, which ended up in the public’s domain and was also read on various talk shows.

The leaked letter which had come from the Director of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Mr. Colin Roberts had contained information regarding the Biwater Water Purchase agreement.

An investigation was ordered by Governor Boyd McCleary into the matter which was carried out by Complaints Commissioner Elton Georges.

However, Mr. Georges in his report had stated that, “My overall conclusion is that the letter from Colin Roberts could have been leaked to a member of the public by any one of a number of persons (12 or more) who had access over a period of months, particularly to the hard copy. I have not been able to establish from this investigation if this document was leaked and, if so, by whom.”

Mr. Georges has recommended that a review of document security be undertaken, with special attention being paid to electronic data management. The Governor has accepted Mr. Georges’ recommendation.

While I understand Mr. Rhymer’s concerned for other matters throughout the BVI, I am most interested in hearing what he plans to do for the 9th district. I am sure there are others who feel the same way. Mr. Rymer, what are you going to do about our airport, proper medical facilities and the educational system (mainly the dilapidated school conditions)? Convince me not to vote for Ralph.
