BVI to face Defending Champs Guyana in Rugby Tourney!

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The tournament, known as the “2011 DHL NACRA Sevens” takes place in Bridgetown, Barbados on November 12, & 13, 2011 and features for the first time, representation from all of North American and Caribbean Rugby Association’s members of which the BVI will be participating.
In the Men’s competition, the BVI team has been drawn in the same group as Guyana, who are defending their title for the 5th time, having won the Caribbean Sevens Championships on the last four occasions. Also in the same group are St Lucia and Curacao.
The BVI team though, has nothing to fear with its steady development and improvement under coach Solomon. The squad has also been hard at practice working on fitness levels and ball handling skills as well as tactics.
Speedy Winger Jerome Springette will be a vital part of the BVI attack down the flanks.
A 12-man squad for the tournament is almost settled with two or three “tough decisions” still facing the coach. Alex Davidson, Heath Copeland, Fred Zacary, Jimmy Peters, Nicholas Recondo, Jacques Roux, Greg Boyd, Andre Adams, Andrew Symonds, Jerome Springette and Victor Franklyn can begin packing their bags. Whilst the likes of Johnny Bailey, recently back from overseas, Tom Chapman, Shem Ellis and Donovan Staples face an anxious wait to see if they make the cut.
The Guyanese team in particular, should be in fine form entering the tournament, since they would have just returned from the PANAM Games in Mexico. However, they will face stiff opposition from an ever improving Jamaican team who were unlucky to win the tournament in 2010 and from Trinidad & Tobago and Bahamas who continue to impress at the shortened game.
Curacao will be fielding a team in the NACRA Sevens for the first time and the tournament sees the return of USA South, who on their last outing in the event finished a creditable 4th. With Mexico, Cayman and Bermuda all showing significant improvements in recent years, courtesy of well developed youth programmes, each of the 4 pools in the men’s tournament will be hotly contested.
In last year’s tournament, the BVI lost their opening match 35 -0 to the Bahamas, drew 7-7 with Barbados and finished with 31-5 and 46-0 loses to Mexico and Trinidad respectively.

Men’s Pool C: Mexico, Cayman, Bermuda, USA South
Men’s Pool D: Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago, Guadeloupe, St Vincent & the Grenadines

The game thus demands high levles of skill, speed and fitness . Sevens is a game of continuous action; there are fewer rucks, fewer mauls and fewer scrums and this arguably translates to more rugby over a short span of timeLONG VERSUS SHORT: which way for Kenyan Rugby?
