Amsterdam, Harrigan win Race Series on Virgin Gorda

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Virgin Gorda leg of the 2011 H. Lavity Stoutt Community College – Highland Spring Race Series ended on Saturday November 4, 2011 with Emrol Amsterdam, for the second consecutive year, and Laurel Harrigan emerging as the top male and female athletes in the Open Category.

Amsterdam was followed by Curwin Andrews and Charles Bartholomew, who ranked second and third overall.

Race Director Stephanie Russ Penn was high in praises for Zebalon McLean, who visited from across the waters on Tortola to participate in the races, and made them highly competitive with wins in the first and third events.

The second and third overall places for the women went to Joyce Russell and Christina Yates.

In the Primary School Division, newcomers Little Rainbow tied for first place with defending champion Levon’s Leopards. In second place was Corner Stone, followed by Steven’s Stallions and Valley Day School tying for third.

Top primary school male athlete was Leonardo Lewis of Little Rainbow, while for the females, it was D’Neigh Williams of Levon’s Leopards.

The Secondary School Division saw defending champion Bregado Flax Educational Centre’s Harrigan House claiming the title with O’Neal and Rhymer Houses tying for second.

Top male and female secondary school athletes were J’Verne Findley and Lil Makeda Fahie.

Zebalon McClean travelled from Tortola and made the race more competitive, winning two events.

The Tortola leg of the HLSCC Race for a Cause, which will be held in collaboration with the BVI Diabetes Association, is slated for Saturday November 12, 2011 at the College’s main Campus in Paraquita Bay. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and race time is 7:00 a.m.
