ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Zora S. Williams, 16, credits lots of studying, sleepless nights, parental support, a strong school system and most of all- trust and faithfulness in and to God- for her success at the National School Leaving Examination (NSLE) which saw her emerging as the territory’s top student.

“Late nights, early mornings and sometimes even sleepless nights contributed to my success, also with encouragement from my family, teachers and the entire Seventh-day Adventist Church family I was able to achieve this milestone,” said an elated Zora S. Williams as she prepared to be whisked off to dinner with an older brother as part of her success celebrations.

Ms Williams, a Virgin Islander by birth, said while she knew she would have placed among the top students in the territory at the examinations this year, coming out as the number one student in the territory came as a surprise.

A medical doctor in the making that loves to cook

“I was extremely elated but I was humbled and joyful at the same time at the achievement. It was God who helped me through it.”

Ms Williams’ next move will be to the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) where she intends to pursue studies in the field of the Sciences as, according to her, her career goal is leaning towards becoming a doctor even though she is yet to decide what type of medical doctor she wants to become.

“I know for sure I want to become a doctor but I am not yet exactly sure what type of doctor I want to be so I will decide soon but I will be going to the college, HLSCC, to study the sciences,” she told this news site in an exclusive interview.

Her mother, Ms Merell Williams aka ‘Sonia’, was evenly excited about the accomplishment of her daughter as she noted that she has been a child that is very rounded. She said that in addition to her passion for success, Zora loves to cook and does very well and is committed to God and her church life.

“She is a very rounded girl, she loves to cook. She is not all about books, she knows how to mix it and that’s what I admire her the most,” said the mother. “She is very much focused, very focused.”

15 of 36 SDA students made National Honour Roll

Ms Zora S. Williams was one of 36 students who sat the examinations this year at the BVI SDA School and according to the Principal Mr Wade W. Tobin, the school recorded a 100% pass rate with all the students receiving grade ones in all their subject areas.

He described Ms Williams as being a very disciplined student and has always been committed to doing well. “We saw that in her from the time she came in at the elementary school.”

According to Mr Tobin, fifteen (15) of the thirty six (36) student made the Honour Roll for the territory this year, with one High Honour.

This news site understands that the St George’s Secondary School also recorded 100% passes this year, with all the students obtaining grade ones. However, statistics from the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) were not forthcoming as efforts to secure same from the Principal Ms Sandy M. Underhill were futile as she directed this news site to the Department of Education.

The transition – ESHS back to SDA school

Last year, Mr Tobin hadn’t his contract renewed by the Ministry of Education and Culture as Acting Principal of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) after acting in the position for some two years. He was replaced by Ms Underhill.

He has since returned to the Seventh-day Adventist School in Sea Cows Bay. “I was here before five years ago, 2007 to 2012, and you know I had a short acting appointing at Elmore Stoutt High School for two years, 2012 to 2014, and I came back last year (to the SDA School) so it’s a rewarding feeling.”

Mr Tobin said it is rewarding not just for him personally but the entire school, including his staff who came in for high notes of praise.

No principal/person is perfect. Bear in mind that Elmore Stoutt is a Public School. You can therefore imagine the challenges that Mr. Tobin faced there. The SDA school operates by a different set of standards. All in all, Mr. Tobin is now at his church school, which like any school will have its challenges.

To add to that Elmore Stoutt High has way more students than SDA! a lot more.

SDA did well whether he was there or not. It's a private school that takes learning and discipline very seriously. The nonsense allowed in public schools are not allowed there. The parents need to get involved and we will see a bigger difference. Stop depending on teachers, principals and politicians to raise our kids.

You must realize the ESHS is far greater school and cannot be compared to SDA

Congratulations, Zora! Continue to strive for excellence.

The Principal and Staff of the SDA School must also be congratulated for their dedication. I can only imagine the pride her parents now feel; you deserve to feel proud of Zora's accomplishment!

Take a good look at this young lady. One can see at first glance that she comes from a very disciplined home. Her dress and hairstyle are befitting a school-aged child. There is also a certain modesty and innocence about her demeanor. I am not surprised that she has done very well. Her focus is on the right things, with the good guidance of her mother and her school.

Congratulations to you Zora. Keep reaching for the stars and may your trust and hope in God remain secure.

I am more elated at the fact that despite Mr Tobin's short time at the ESHS it paid off well. I always admire his strict discipline and how he push for nothing than the best from students. He is tough at times, but its for our children's good. Good luck to all for a succesful school year and I wish you the best in all your future endeavors.

Principal Tobin you showed those naysayers that you will be a success story. You deserve a big raise. God has your back. I love dealing with you as a person and as a principal. You are not taking home the teachers/students business and discussing it at the round table with your family. You have integrity!

Discipline, Pride, Respect, Parents involvement, dedicated teachers, These are what the private Schools have over our public Schools. The curricular are the same, the teachers are the same qualified...We need to fix our public Schools.....Teachers at our public schools need to be good sales people, sell them selves, be empathetic, build good relationship with each other and with the students

I will be happy to see the name of God take the place of the word demon in all of the above. Come on BVI we are living on miracles from the God above, no time to waste talking about demons.
