ROAD TOWN, Tortola – Virgin Islands (VI) broadcaster, ZBVI yesterday Friday, July 12, 2019, moved to recognize the accomplishments of its General Knowledge Quiz participants.

With 90 points, Anjanique Cheltenham claimed the top spot for the second consecutive year and the top five rankings included: Jaani Hazel and Neman Romney tied at fourth place with 89 points; Anniah Williams and Loren Baptiste tied at third place with 87 points; Kaosha Theophile and Analisa Percell Jones tied at fourth place with 82 points; Caleb Dawson closed out the top five with 80 points.

The top students and their parents, along with sponsors and supporters, were recognized at The Virgin Queen restaurant in Road Town.

Continuing the legacy

The late Merritt Herbert, who originated the General Knowledge Quiz many years ago, was remembered throughout the event. Delker Herbert Vardilos, daughter of the late Herbert, hosted the event on behalf of ZBVI to continue her father’s legacy.

“I’ve said this for the last few years when he fell ill and since his passing – this event was so close and dear to his heart. He had a passion for young people and wanted to see them grow. This avenue was one small way to help in that effort,” Ms Vardilos said.

Herbert Vardilos continued, “We will always remember him as we celebrate the children because they are our future.”  Ms Vardilos thanked the parents, the quiz’s sponsors and supporters, ZBVI’s staff and the community for continuing to support the children.

“We are so thankful for the investment from the sponsors, the community, the staff of ZBVI, and the parents. We are all in this together. Working together, we can build a successful future for the British Virgin Islands and the greater world,” She said in encouraging students to read books and not allow electronic tools to always be the go-to option.

Quiz gets you thinking – Hon Fraser

Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3), one of the quiz’s sponsors imparted a few words at the gathering on the importance of the quiz, “This gets you thinking early, and you get a head start. This program enlightens you to so many things in the world.”

Hon Frazer continued, ”You are here today because someone had a vision. A lot of people have the vision, but it’s the vehicle to make that vision a reality is what’s more important than anything else. Mr Herbert had the vision and he had the vehicle, the radio station, ZBVI,” he said.

A longtime sponsor of the General Knowledge quiz, Jasmine Brewley of J&C Trading also celebrated the children at the event. The General Knowledge Quiz is also sponsored by the James Todman Construction Company, Hon Marlon Penn (R7), D&B Trucking, Hon Mitch Turnbull (R2), Virgin Queen Restaurant, Newton Construction & LJD VI Block.

criticize by some, ignored by others, ZBVI continues to lead the BVI with meaningful programming that is useful to all Virgin Islanders. Came alive in 65 and still going. Great day for the kids. Congrats
