Youth forum on ‘Bikes in the VI’ expected to draw wide participation
Speaking exclusively with Virgin Islands News Online Mr Winter said that he feels strongly that he has a duty to organize and spearhead a forum that would give especially youths and other enthusiasts of motorcycles the opportunity to share their thoughts on the subject.
“Many of these younger guys in the BVI look up to me when it comes to motorcycling and motorcycles and I feel that I owe them that much as to help them get their voices heard on a number of issues that are being hushed in various corners,” Mr Winter, Owner of G-Spot, said.
According to Winter, he is not as involved in motorcycling as he was in the more developed world as a professional motorcyclist. But with his own son going through a near death experience and more recently with feeling the pain of several persons that are very close to his heart lose their children to motorcycle accidents, he is hoping that this initiative would play a major role in influencing the legislators of the Territory to amend and make laws that would make the VI more comfortable.
“I have and am speaking with almost all the government leaders, churches, district leaders, the police, every young person with an interest in this to all come out let’s discuss this matter,” he told this news site.
He believes that the community forum will be biggest ever of this nature to have been organized and this can cause a major development. “I want everyone to come out the ministers, the district leaders this is an issue that concerns us all and we need to have it looked at.” He said among others that would be main facilitators to advise and guide the topic would be international motorcycling record holder Mr Lawrence A. Fonseca aka Sinbad.
The public notice – Mr Shane M. Winter
“I have the pleasure to inform you that I am organizing a community meeting at the G-spot (UPs) on Thursday February 20, 2014, that will address the important issue of laws concerning motorcycle use and safety in the territory. Over the past year, the number of motorcyclist fatalities and injuries has risen. We therefore deem it necessary to take this bold step aimed at promoting motorcycle safety and understanding the factors that contribute to correct use of protective gear in order to maximize safety efforts.
One key effort is the addition of stipulations aimed at specifying the type of helmets that bikers are permitted to wear in the territory. Another key point of interest is the legal engine size of motorcycles that can be imported or used in the territory. We aim to create a medium for discussion that will consequently offer recommendations for additional steps such as these and others that can be taken to encourage safe riding and reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities.
We would like to get the conversation started, as we aim to champion the cause of implementing laws that are relevant to the needs of riders in the territory. Your presence at this meeting would be greatly appreciated......”
