'Your shake hand is not welcomed!'- Hon Vanterpool
"I asked the Premier to make a public announcement, no shake hands. We have a problem. As politicians people are always anxious to shake our hands, we welcome that, but I am letting people know, please during that period, your shake hand is not welcomed," Hon Vanterpool said.
Speaking at a Monday, November 17, 2020 Opposition press conference, Hon Vanterpool said, "The elbow, I am not even sure about that because you sneeze in your elbow... but I would like a wave to say hello, good afternoon, good morning, truly, we need to be serious about that," he said.
Calling the hands 'dangerous weapons' at this time, Hon Vanterpool's reasoning is also one with logic regarding preventing the spread of COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control, as part of its tips to protect from contracting the virus, recommends keeping hands as clean as possible and washing often.
'Wave & say hello' - Hon Vanterpool
"Clean your hands often. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol," CDC recommends.
With the use of 60% alcohol-based hand sanitiser, the recommendation is to cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
"Quit the shaking hands and let's say hello, and wave and look like a queen or a king and bow," Hon Vanterpool said.
The CDC also recommends that you avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
