You have to be brave in tackling sewerage – Hon Fraser
“Sewerage is a major issue in the Territory. Hence someone has to be courageous enough to deal with it and deal with it effectively. You are not going to get any friends dealing with it because it’s a messy business. It’s hard, it’s a lot of work that is going to cost a lot of money,” disclosed Hon. Fraser at the House of Assembly (HOA) sitting that was held on December 21, 2011.
The 3rd district representative, who played a role in BiWater being hired to remedy sewerage on Tortola, added he will not go as far as to wish Hon. Vanterpool luck because “I will be patronizing him”.
“All I can say is that the things that he [Hon. Vanterpool] has outlined, what he will have his officers do is a tough row to hoe. If he can achieve what he says then he is on the right track, but this is no small issue Madam Speaker, the National Sewerage project has been going since 2002. It’s a roller coaster, one time it’s on, one time it’s off. It goes back on and I hope it stays on or else we will never get this issue under control,” the 3rd district rep. stated.
Meanwhile, at the same HOA sitting, Minister Vanterpool had noted that the cost of fixing the sewerage was in the vicinity of $24M, adding more monies may be needed to complete the project. However, Hon. Fraser cautioned that additional funding should not scare the Minister.
“You get the tendency to pull back, meaning to stop the project. Its real…East End, Long Look, Road Town, and I want the Minister to take a look at the budget estimates…he must look at the notes and he will see Sea Cows Bay in there too. We have a sewerage collection and treatment problem in Sea Cows Bay as well and is one that must be dealt with,” he added.
