'You can't allow people to come into your country & disrespect you’- Skelton-Cline
“For those of us who still don’t understand why there is such a big deal out of this, you cannot allow people to come into your country, your culture and disrespect you in this manner,” he said on a special Wednesday, September 24, 2020, edition of his 'Honestly Speaking' radio show on ZBVI 780 AM.
No disrespect from outsiders - Skelton-Cline
Over the weeks, the governor has been under fire following an interview with 284 Media, where he said that paying reparations to the Virgin Islands (VI) for acts of slavery and the slave trade is not the position of the United Kingdom (UK) at the moment, while calling for relics of slavery to be preserved in the Territory.
Mr Skelton-Cline, in the latest episode of his radio talk show, said the comments have belittled and desecrated VI's ancestors, who faced brutal slavery at the hands of the British and that it also came at a time when slavery relics of the past are being removed in countries around the world.
“We are calling for, and will continue every time we get on this programme, an apology on behalf of his belittling and desecrating our ancestors, their blood, their sweat, their tears and ultimately their death.”
Calls for apology mount
Meanwhile, several respected community voices have also weighed in on the Governor's highly controversial statements.
Mr Turnbull said the statements by the Governor were made in a "derogatory kind of way" while radio show host and social commentator Mr Kenneth G. Gladstone called the statements "absolutely insulting."
“I don’t like foolishness and I’m a black man, and when a white man who represents slavery can tell me that I don’t deserve reparations, you infuriate the hell out of me" Mr Gladstone said.
'Gov has no moral fundation' to make statement - Talk show host
Mr Gladstone further said the Governor has no moral foundation to tell anyone that people of African ancestry do not deserve reparation.
“He has no moral foundation to be making such statements, it’s a disgrace… but the people of the BVI they sit quietly and allow this man to be insulting to them like that," he said.
