Yet another Ports Project accident with collision of 2 barges

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Cruise Pier work site has experienced yet another mishap which is likely to cause further delays to the multimillion dollar project already behind schedule. This time, it was a collision between two barges which took place today December 18, 2014.

It is alleged that a tug working on site was moving a barge from one point in the water to another to pick up some more piles when another barge in the area vessel sounded its horn to indicate that it was coming.

According to an eyewitness on the scene, when it got close, the barge that sounded its horn tried to turn in an effort to avoid colliding with the materials barge. However, it ended up slamming its left side into the left side of the materials barge.

Officials at the Pier Project site were up to post time awaiting an official report on the accident. From all indications thus far, there have been no reports of injuries to anyone as a result.

Efforts to reach Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) Claude O. Skelton-Cline proved futile.

However, Ports Authority Public Relations Officer April T. Glasgow, responding on behalf of the BVIPA said, “We are awaiting the incident report, after which we will be able to better inform the public. For now, what we do know is that a contractor barge hit a cargo barge.”

This news site also tried reaching the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry for a comment but we were not successful.

On October 6, 2014, a truck ferrying stone at the Cruise Pier Project worksite overturned into the water as it was negotiating a narrow pass.

When we do things in a crocked way there will be mishaps. Hope that an inquiry will be done on that ports project. Too many secrets. Tax payers need to know where their money is going. Too many inconsistencies. Consultant to ports manager. Too much corruption.

Check the Labor code (2012 version). It contains provisions for written health and safety programs, and their implementation. A project like this should be exemplary in that aspect but instead, business as usual as it seems as we continue to ignore the rules that are inconvenient.
