WEST END, Tortola, VI- It took more than five years to materialise but persons especially in West End seeking to get fit, lose some pounds or pack on some muscles can now go to a gym right in their area to achieve that objective.

The Universal Gym VI, located in the West End Community Centre building, officially opened its doors this evening January 5, 2017. The facility is being run by Mr Don Carlos K. Hadaway, a fitness trainer.

A number of persons, including some from outside of West End, attended the opening and got a feel of the variety of equipment available to ensure a complete body workout.

Long in coming

First District Representative Hon Andrew A. Fahie congratulated Mr Hadaway on coming through to his word on opening up a gym for the West End Community. He added that since 2010 he was pushing to have a gym in the area and continued to fight for it even after his Virgin Islands Party (VIP) came out of power in 2011.

“I have been fighting since then to have the gym open and to get somebody to come along with a good plan and can take it and lease it out. We had many persons that had a lot of good plans on paper but they never materialised.”

Hon Fahie said he knows Mr Hadaway to be not just business-minded and knows his craft but also caring about the health and fitness of persons.

A feature of the gym is a ‘kiddies corner’ for members with young children and Hon Fahie commended Mr Hadaway for the initiative.

Best membership rates

Mr Hadaway began by joking that his gym is the first with television before letting persons know that the facility offers the best membership rates on the island and also low prices on supplements.

He also assured that he will always be there to help everyone especially beginners to reach their goals. The gym’s slogan is ‘Fitness is not about being better than someone else...it’s about being better than you used to be!’

Monthly membership is $50, 6 months $270 and yearly $480.

Opening hours is 5:00 A.M. to 7:00 A.M. and 5:30 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. The gym closes early on Fridays and is closed on Saturdays.

A few of you hate Fahie so that once his name pops up it is only negative comments. That's why I admire Fahie because despite the few critics & despite being in the Opposition where the government limits you in many areas, he keeps working for the people and doing good. Keep it up Carlos & Fahie.

Andrew looks like he needs to : 1. Sign up for membership at that gym, or 2. Simply wait until election time comes around. Guy sheds weight every election. Check it out for yourself next time around.... But yeh, that new image he had going on ain't last no time atall.......

We all know the few disgruntled VIP persons who still want Fraser or Dancia to lead the VIP will jump on Fahie for everything that is of a foolish nature but that will not stop him because with God's help he will be the next Premier so eat your heart out.

You need a gym on a Tropical island to lose weight? So much so that the district leader had to fight fiercely for one? And this makes him worthy to be Premier? Seriously? Will he be fighting fiercely to have Gov moneys pay your memberships in this privately owned business, considering his pronouncements about the hand to mouth existence of all yo existence?
    Well sah!

Every person in those photos are over weight. The truth is no Ac fancy gym with shiny new equipment will encourage or help people to loose weight. It's proper commitment to a proper diet. Nothing beats waking up early in the morning and walking / running. We are in the beautiful Islands and we always want to be cooped up in a building. This is very laughable. I give them two months, the gym will be empty. In 2 years the gym will be closed due to lack of membership and maintenance.

Flourescent lighting, closed or windowless rooms and stale air appears to be seen as a luxury to my people here in tropical paradise. Maybe it is the mold and flu like symptoms they are looking forward to for yet another whining and complaining session.
