DUFF'S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – Courtesy of time draining decision making and an out of bounds turnover by Splash Brothers, Sean ‘Chino’ Woods and Pure Playaz were able to pull off a 105-104 victory on Saturday September 17, 2016 in the Hon Julian Fraser/Save the Seed Basketball League at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duffs Bottom.

Down by as many as 15 points in the first quarter, the Playaz rallied around the driving force of Woods in the second period to reduce the deficit to just three points with five minutes remaining until half time.

Terrell David went five for five from the Free Throw line for the Playaz to nullify the speed and shooting prowess of the Brothers and with three minutes’ left on the clock it was that man, Woods, who popped in two more points to level the game.

However, the Splash Brothers are a fighting group and they went into the break up by four at 45-41.

Woods began the third quarter with a long range splash for three and then after the match had been all square briefly, the Brothers pulled ahead by six points. Such was the pace of the game that Shamoii A. Dagou had a momentary brain freeze as to which way he was shooting and continued his evening’s nightmare from the Free Throw line.

At 65-65 with three minutes to go, the Playaz grabbed their biggest lead of the game, when Dwayne Stoutt and a Woods /David combination play made it 72-67 in their favour.

See-saw affair

The final ten minutes began with the same margin at 76-71 to the Playaz, however ,Woods began to lose his shooting control and the Brothers pulled it back to just a two-point game and then back to back three pointers from Karvin Robin and Ashfield Frett regained them the lead.

Michael Benjamin went two for two to make it 91-87 to the Brothers and then repeated the effort to leave the Playaz down by nine points with just 2:46 showing on the clock.

Woods then found his shooting range again, sinking a three, scoring off his own steal and adding a free throw to make it 104-101 to the Brothers with just 38 seconds left.

Another trip to the Free Throw line saw Woods give the Playaz the lead at 103-104 and then as the Brothers got stuck between their usual shooting game or letting the clock wind down by holding onto possession, the Playaz were able to seal the deal, regaining the ball from an out of bounds turnover and scoring the winning basket as Stoutt was on hand to tip in the rebound from Woods’ initial attempt.

Woods finished with 44 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals for the Playaz, Dwayne Stoutt 19, David 12 with 7 rebounds, Jhoan Sierro 11 rebounds and Jose Balbuena 9 rebounds.

Frett notched 25 points, Robin 24 with 16 rebounds, Benjamin 22, Jerry Alejando 14 with 13 rebounds and Dagou 13 for Splash Brothers.
