ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - With a barrage of promises for the 2020 new year, Sixth District Representative in the Virgin Islands (VI) House of Assembly (HoA), Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines (R6) says she is looking forward to a new year of renewed friendship and partnerships in her district.

Hon Madura-Caines made the promises in her official holiday message released Christmas Day, December 25, 2019, via social media through the Government Information Service where she also spoke of more development to come in District Six.

"To my people of the Sixth District, I especially want to share love and appreciation with you and your family from my family to yours... I thank you for your support this year and look forward to a renewed friendship and partnership in the new year."

Hon Maduro-Caines continued, "The new year will bring great developments for our districts, a new park in Baughers Bay to bring family and friends together, more development of our infrastructure, and more community-minded events," she said in the short video.

According to the D6 representative, 2020 must be a year of togetherness and she will work towards that mandate in the new year while being a continuous servant to the people.

Busy 2019 for Hon Maduro-Caines

However, even as Hon Maduro-Caines has promised to put the district first in 2020, over the 2019 year, the representative has been especially vocal and emotional over several social issues in the territory.

These include; The Clear Path to Regularisation: Residency and Belonger Status Programme, speaking against a 2 years jail sentence handed down to a youth who looted a Television during Irma of 2017 and even claiming in May 2019 that the territory was in a 'constitutional crisis' during the court battle surrounding the HoA seat of Hon Mark H. Vanterpool (R4).

At a September 10, 2019, Opposition-led meeting in the East End/Long Look Community she said the territory should not 'lay down and play dead' when it comes to its relationship with the United Kingdom (UK) and earlier at a September 2, 2019, Sitting of the House she told the legislators that her District was starting to look like a dump.

In a social media post on November 19, 2019, she further remarked 'Just in case you're wondering, Yes, I do work and loving it," with an accompanying office photograph. In that same month, over the issue of Crafts Alive vendors owing the ‘City’ in excess of half a million dollars, Hon Maduro-Caines called for the debts to be forgiven.

Forgive Debts - Hon Maduro-Caines

"Yes a lot of them owe a lot of money but a payment plan that some have asked for is virtually impossible to be paid at that time because some have been given a three-month period to pay off six thousand and ten thousand dollars and I can’t see that happening,” she said at a press conference called by the Opposition on November 13, 2019.

However, even with some amount of public criticism over the year, Hon Maduro-Caines' approval ratings outside her district remains high.

“I visited our sister island VG… for a few hours and felt like a celebrity. The surprise look on some people faces was priceless. The hugs and kisses and picture taking, made my day,” she said on Facebook following a visit to the island on Saturday, October 6, 2019.

Ms Maduro-Caines has been the representative for District 6 since 2011 after winning the seat from its previous representative, the late Omar W. Hodge of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP).

Demolish those buildings and turn that place into a park with trees, benches and a bandstand.

The Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines bursted on the scene with much fanfare in 2011 as the NDP candidate for D-6. In a David-Goliath like campaign, she slayed the late Hon Omar “People’s Man” Hodge, long-serving D-6 Rep. However, though a good person and well-meaning, she has proven to be a flash in the pan, and a light, light weight. Within the NDP, she had no juice, and was lightly regarded with little influence. She had value in casting a vote, albeit the NDP had an 11-2 advantage. After Premier D. Orlando Smith fired former legislators A. Christian and R. Skelton, and with little other choice, she and former legislator H. Oneal, D-9, got short stints as junior ministers. The Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines is in her 9 year as a legislator but what marker has she laid down? Clearly, the voters in D-6 have confidence in her and her ability to deliver the goods, bring home the bacon, having elected her thrice.

However, despite her thin record of accomplishments, she has proven herself to be force to be reckon with; can we label her as “less”? Well, a majority of her constituents do not think she is less. She is waxing about all the things she will do in 2020. However, as a member of the last government, she got little done so how now in opposition will she pull a rabbit out the hat? Does she have something up her sleeve? As the late “Bruk” use to say, well mai boi!

We don't want to be too quick to criticize this young lady and her work. We must remember that she is not inherently a politician. Rather, she was pressed into service when no one else was willing to put themselves on the line on behalf of her people. No one can honestly say that she hasn't been trying.

@Jason, she is on her third term yet she is not a politician? Stop the nonsense. What is an inherent politician anyway? Alvera didn’t run oppose in any of her three campaigns so she is not just stepping up because no one wants to run. She ran against Omar, Juggy and John.
