ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The U-10 BD Basketball District King League Final was an exciting affair on Saturday April 20, 2013 as the Lakers beat the Spurs 17-15 in an end to end thriller.

The first half of the game was all about cut and thrust with both teams sizing up their opponents and none really able to seize a tactical advantage, although the Lakers held a slender 2-point advantage at 8-6.

The Spurs battled back during the 3rd quarter to make it 12-10 in their favour and with just over two minutes left in the 4th the game, was all squared at 12-12.

Lakers’ Kahmani Caul drew a foul by Elroy Bollers as he prepared to shoot and scored both free throws to make it 14-12, but Shawn Morris also hit 2 free throws to level it up again at 14-14 and then with the clock showing 1:09 left, the Lakers scored again from the free throw line to make it 15-14.

Shamoi Dore then fouled Dejonte George who scored 1 of 2 with 37.1 seconds left to make it 15-15 and the play became frantic and more like watching Tennis as the spectators’ heads followed the ball from end to end.

With under 15 seconds remaining, the Spurs lost possession through a turnover and where made to pay dearly by Dore, who atoning for his previous mistake, splashed a 2 pointer to give his team the edge at 17-15.

As the buzzer sounded, Bollers launched a shot that would have tied the scores only for Jahdique Winchester to leap up and block the effort to ensure the Lakers lifted the Championship Trophy.

Tyrece top scored with 8 points for the Lakers and Dore finished with 6. For the Spurs, Malacki Smith scored 8 and there was 2 a piece for Morris, Keshaun and Esprit.

At the award Ceremony, Tyriece Carrasco was named MVP for the Lakers, whilst Bollers took the honour for the Spurs, Sahjani France for the Celtics and Requan Garoway for the Heat.

Bollers was further honoured with the President’s, Brian “Bash” Brewley’s Sportsmanship Award.

The U-13 Championship went to District 6 who beat District 5 31-19 in a surprisingly lop sided affair with District 6´s Malaki Thomas leading the way with 10 points and Cletus Bannis scoring 5 . For District 5, Malique Wattley finished with 7 points and Reaquan Garrarway 6 points.

The MVP was Sajwan France and the Presidential Sportsmanship award went to Donaldson Layne.

The BVI Girls then took on their USVI counterparts in an exhibition game that went the way of the visitors 26-23 despite some good all round performances by Bianca Brewley and Joy Victor.

The USVI seemed to have the game sewn up when with less than 4 minutes to go they were ahead 20-15 after a foul from Shaliqua Fahie and a successful free throw.

Lareisha Martin then popped in a 2 pointer to make it 20-17 and Victor, who missed a 3 point attempt moments earlier, picked up a pass from Brewley and sank a 2 to make it 20-19 with 2:12 left on the clock.

The BVI surged forward and launched shot after shot on the USVI basket, but conceded another score to the USVI until Brewley scored to make it 22-21. A turnover and a Victor foul gave the USVI a 23-21 lead from the free throw line and another visit following a Fahie foul increased their lead to 3 points at 24-21.

Brewley sank another 2 to make it 24-23 and a steal and burst to the paint from Victor was pulled up short when she was adjudged to have “travelled”. With the clock ticking below 13 seconds remaining, the shouts from the coach to give away a foul were met, but the ploy backfired as the USVI sank both attempts to make it 26-23.

At the buzzer, Brewley launched an attempted 3 to send the game into overtime, but it hit the rim and bounced away to give the USVI the victory.

Brewley finished with 10 points, Victor 7 and Fahie 4, whilst for the USVI M. Mike scored 11, A. Richardson 5 and T. Lake 4.
