‘Why not rent empty top floors of new Peebles Hospital?’ – Mr Julio 'Sam' Henry

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – With the constant shifting of the dates for the official opening of the new Peebles Hospital and the struggles to finance its furnishings local talk show host Mr Julio ‘Sam’ Henry asked about the possibility of government renting some sections of the building as an income generating measure.

On his television show of Saturday September 20, 2014 Mr Henry put the suggestion out to the public. Subsequently this news site further sought to delve into the thinking and rationale behind the suggestion of Mr Henry.

“I said I wonder if the government [could consider] maybe looking into working with a university or a major hospital system that could offer some of the trauma care that we often go off island for. Why not look at a university that offers a lot of medical services and I think we would get more benefit from something like that,” he told this news site.

He further explained that should the idea be explored by the government it would mean that access to certain care would be readily available to patients who would have otherwise had to travel to other destinations to access a particular health care service.

“If it’s a major hospital like Jackson Memorial in Florida USA then you will have access to world class care, trauma care. In that way you don’t have to fly people off island whenever you have trauma situation, that’s what I was suggesting,” said Henry.

Mr Henry also said that with his idea there can be a significant plus for the now touted medical tourism drive in the Virgin Islands (VI).

“We are not doing anything right now, the two top floors are vacant. It’s going to cost the government a bunch of money to get them operational. To maintain a hospital you need patients in order to generate the revenue so why not look at an institution that could possibly use it as part of their school system or as part of their medical facility,” he suggested.

He said that in order to have medical tourism there needs to be an institution in place with certain types of care that is generally being sought for by patients internationally. “You have to partner with somebody. You either bring doctors in or have the doctors work for the system or you’ll have to bring in an institution.”

Why don't you go and take a tour of the facilities before running your mouth. There are plans for top floor.
    Tours are Thursdays at 1pm

All this talk of the top floor pales in the current "wwII" layout people layin daily at Peebles. My recent visit suggest you need to move yesterday. Any member of NDP, VIP or whatever PP should cry when they walk though that hospital. Before we undertakde any project reallocate funds and put the people in dignified surroundings when they are sick.
I promise to give the CEO CFO time to sort out the rest before full public exhibit.
I was truly sadden to see our current hospital. Change need to come yesterday. Stop the foolish exhibit of playing the piper while people suffer and die.
