GREAT HARBOUR, Jost van Dyke, VI - Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) says despite some current advertising for boat rides, the government has issued no permission for any such event.

“I see advertisements coming out… we’re going to have a big boat ride, and you can come and all kind of artists and so further. Well, who gave the permission?” Hon Malone questioned during a Thursday, January 14, 2021, government community meeting on Jost van Dyke.

“I do know that we have $10,000 and 15,000 fines that we have coming in, so it’s important for us to take some time and explain this because this is the biggest bone of contention to some people,” Hon Malone said.

Returning residents not staying still - Hon Malone

Further, the Minister said the government is having difficulties getting locals to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols and said that in a recent conversation with the Chief Medical Officer, he was told, “the residents are not staying still.”

Compared to visitors who are quarantining on sea and land, the Health Minister said returning residents are the biggest cause of concern.

Hon Malone revealed that it was because the Government could not afford to keep monitoring individuals in each home, hotels and boats, there was a need to turn to electronic monitoring.

He said as per the recommendation of the Chief Medical Officer; however, the government will now have to look into better forms of electronic monitoring to prevent the spread of the virus.

We've been saying for more than 6 months that returning nationals and residents are the problem, , But the Premier stand still in defending them, while looking reasons to blame and punished the tourist that's why all of them moving to St Thomas and St Johns because they not feeling welcome and wanted here,,,,,

You arrive in STT, you show the National Guard your papers with vaccine proof, and as you go to get your luggage, you get a rum sample as personnel greet you with a Welcome to St.Thomas. Here, you get legendary rudeness, or, if your lucky indifference with a hint of resentment, and a distinct sense that locals are entitled to your money. Maybe something to learn from USVI approach, or perhaps not, as the concept of customer service has never caught on here.

With all the hard work the government is putting into Covid and keeping us safe, I too am concern with the amount of fliers circulating. The government needs to crack down on these events and if permission is granted, ensure the social distancing task force is monitoring the businesses. Hon. Malone, its time for you and your ministry and team members to put your foot down. Whether it cost a vote or not. The people are lawless in the BVI and fail to follow all rules. We will only understand when Covid hits home. Do your job.

I have a lot of respect for the Chief Medical Officer as a person but frankly as it relates to COVID, he has proven to be a fearmongerer and of no use.

Why are you belittling the CMO for the disrespect of our own, who do not adhere to the safety guidelines? Must our CMO be everywhere? Are we not mature adults capable of doing what is expected of us? One of our biggest problems is not accepting responsibility and always wanting to blame others for our wrongdoings.
