EAST END/LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI – “What aspect of this programme will cater for the troubled youths of our communities, those in crimes, those who have nothing to do and end up at the courts and Balsam Ghut?”

This was one of the many questions asked by residents of the East End/Long Look communities at a meeting with senior members of Government and Representatives from the Seventh and Eighth Districts to discuss the proposed construction of a stadium for the Greenland area on October 30, 2013

The question arose following statements by Representative for the Eighth District Honourable Marlon A. Penn surrounding the provisions being made to engage youths who are into sports. He spoke of the achievements of many national athletes who hailed from the communities of East End and Long Look while noting there are many others yet to be discovered.

“The children who are involved in criminal activities, Can’t we can find some project that we could get them in? A lot of our youths are going astray.. I am wondering how this programme could reach out to our troubled youths?” asked a resident who was supported by others.

Both Hon. Pickering and Hon. Penn insisted that with the construction of the stadium there will be the establishment of a comprehensive programme that will cater for all. “We are looking at integrating what is happening at YEP [Youth Empowerment Programme] as part of this programme as well. We are looking at the fact that a number of youths are involved in football through the BVIFA… they have a very structured programme,” said Hon. Penn.

Another programme called ‘Sports for All’, which is being spearheaded by the BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC) is earmarked to be integrated into the package, according to Hon. Penn. “Those are the programmes that we are trying to put in place so that our young people can have an outlet, somewhere for our young people to go. For me, sports was my outlet growing up as a young man in this community,” Hon. Penn further added.

The construction of the international stadium is expected to attract international sports events and other activities to the Virgin Islands.

So we are a welfare state now? What happened to their parents? They want to become breeding factories then still up and down liming through the place leaving their offspring to roam? Well I never.

Troubled? How about admitting that we as parents just didn't do a good job. These young people should be in the free secondary schools, at the free College getting training. We must teach them that they cannot prosper without an education and a good work ethic. What happened to the BVI of my parents day - when we were a proud people? Now we are so greedy and proud that we turn a blind eye to the wrong that our children do. Our children have no manners , no ambition and no plan for the future. As long as we keep blaming the system they will wind up like the same jailbirds they laugh at on BET. We must change now.

So sick and tired of the rewarding of bad behavior. Youths want help, tell them help them self to an education and positive reinforcement of good manners. Let them meditate and come up with business ideas and beneficial plans for the community they live in. Then ask for help in these areas and you can have some tax payers money. Chuh!

for the lack of wisdom my people will perish, this is nothing new these politrickians don't have a clue as to how to solve this problem of troubled youths. They think that putting money into building expensive facilities will be a cure all for the youths who are not confirming to societies standards, them wrong here again, Picko was a ball player but he did not go pro, instead he became a doctor, dudes education is the key to better living, if you want to build a better nation place your efforts on educating the people. If your efforts can reach those guys on the corner and at the stikket give an opportunity to educate themselves, i guarantee you they will not be there anymore. These stadiums will end up being albatross in the community, just sitting there and not being used. Honorable Dr. Smith, Honorable Dr. Pickering, Honorable Marlon Penn, i believe that that # million dollars would be better used and have more effect against vagrancy if it is used to educate your youths, maybe some of these are not college material but they can fix electronics, cars or build homes, place some efforts into somethings like these and see the difference. nuff said.

Doubtful. Having attend last night it was clear that they didn't really want public involvement. No clear answers and, when someone asked "will we be able to send in written comments?" the answer was "I'll see you afterwards to give you my email".
