‘What about Ebola readiness for VI?’ - Residents

-Ministry of Health and Social Development challenged to put measures in place to check tourists for Ebola like symptoms as tourism season is on
Residents are calling on the Health Authorities in the Virgin Islands to make public efforts to guard against any possibility of persons with Ebola like symptoms entering the Territory. Photo: VINO
“Chikungunya, Chikungunya, Chikungunya is all we hearing about and we have a serious issue that is quickly looking like it’s going to become a world pandemic that they are not giving any thought about. In fact I should say they are not telling the public about and have us living in fear,” said Ms Gloria Vanclave-Creque, a resident of Virgin Gorda. Photo: VINO

VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – The Ministry of Health and Social Development continues to come in for severe criticism as residents in some sections of the Territory expressed their opinion to say that the Administration continues to be reactive as opposed to pro-active.

That which she was speaking about is the Ebola virus which has now crept its way into neighbouring United States. “We are right there on the borders of the US. I say border just to show closeness,” she explained.

“Every day we have persons coming into this Territory from all over the world and we are at risk no matter how you look at it. The tourist season is now on us and we are not even hearing of a simple procedure that this government is putting into place to allay fears,” said Ms Vanclave-Creque.

Her concerns were also shared by several taxi drivers on Tortola, Ferry operators and other residents. According to one taxi driver the fact that there has been a number of instances where persons fall ill on cruise ships while docked in the VI, persons fall ill aboard yachts and other [vessels] is an indicator that the Territory should put some measures in place at the hospital if persons show any symptoms of Ebola.

“Our next door neighbour St. Thomas is on a massive move putting systems in place, they are having major education and safety drives going on over there right now and we here aren’t doing a thing. That is crazy. I know for sure I am fearful,” the woman said.

It was expressed that already persons have begun to develop a stigmatic behaviour against anyone especially who is visiting even if they simply cough.

“I can tell you as a taxi man I start moving some tourists that came in early in the season. Some come not from US straight but from far places and boy you wouldn’t believe how afraid I am when I simply hear any of them with a cough or looking sickish,” said a taxi driver.

“Don’t wait for something to happen before you take action… if y’all had done quarter of what you now doing Chikungunya wouldn’t be as rampant. If Ebola should creep in here the BVI wipe out because this is a very small place and our nurses and doctors have not been put at ready mode to deal with Ebola,” said a resident.

I hope they told the public that this disease can arrive here from anywhere in the world and an infected person don't have to be African or black, this is the scary thing, as a result we must not assume that only Africans will have the disease.

Taxi drivers right to be scared and so should everyone else in the BVI. The BVI is NOT equipped to deal with Ebola and we don't know if the US will take our sick people in, they might turn us away for fear of infecting them. Tourist season is upon us and we know that every year at this time there a lot of viruses, like colds etc that come our way, so what is the health service in the BVI planning to do?! Better wake up! and know this is real!

We can't be just checking for people with ebola symptoms. The symptoms might develop after they are already here. We also need to have systems in place for a possible ebola diagnosis in the territory. How do we isolate and treat?

TB kills over 100 people a day in the USA and is an airborne disease. Are we prepared for that? Ebola is NOT airborne and you must come into contact with bodily fluids, secretions from an infected person to get infected. One dead in USA so far from ebola and another tested positive. The mainstream media really have you all stupid like f..k! "Run run the sky is falling!" The only thing BVI can do to stop Ebola or anything else is cancel all flights and cruise ships. Is that practical? NO! Stop the bulls..t noise man. What are you doing about Ebola?

Even without the tourists we need to prepare. People travel. Our leaders travel all over too. Prevention is better than cure. Preparations should have started already. Do not wait to see if it gets here. Prepare.

So everyone is ready now to scorn, reject and avoid tourists because of ebola due to your lack of knowledge - on how to prevent it. What about all you idiots who travel and coma back home? Are there not more tourists in the airports when your travelling that you might come in contact with? ?Especially if you use the bathroom? What should Gov't do about you? Come people stop acting like 3rd world citizens and show that we have some sense and can deal with matters in an intelligent way for once...Please!!!

Our health services need to train our medical staff on how to deal with patients with ebola, get the proper gear in place and isolation areas ready and a definitive plan for destroying material and cremation facilities in place. They need educate the general populace on how the virus is spread and how to avoid the spread of ebola asap. The threat of ebola reaching our shores is very real. Many persons from West Africa travel to visit, live and work in our little Territory everyday. I have not heard of any contingency plan in place or screening. Remember persons can travel to the Territory in seemingly perfect health and days later exhibit ebola symptoms. The ebola virus takes 2 to 21 days to build up in the body before making persons sick. It is time to prepare...the threat is real.

Ban all persons travelling from Africa, simple. BVI cannot handle Ebola. Kind of discriminating but we will get by. We did for years with the rasta law!

Ebola is in the US because its government and health authorities failed to put in place a system to prevent entry of possible carriers into the country. Ebola has no cure. But it can be prevented through vigilance and a no-nonsense approach. This is the time for all the people in the BVIs (Islanders, Belongers and expats) to unite. Everyone has a role to play.
