ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The amount of persons in the Virgin islands that are unemployed, is said to be ridiculously high, according to the Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn, who stated that something has to be done to attend to this problem as much as possible.

The Minister gave these statements at the first sitting of the second session of the second House of Assembly, on September 3, 2012.

Hon. Walwyn said that every day, people are knocking on his doors, talking about being unemployed and how bad they are looking for work.

He stated that the people who are generally looking for work in the territory, are the Virgin Islanders and belongers. “They cannot find work in this country to do anymore.”

The Honorable Minister said “We are concerned that work permits are being granted on a regular basis… We have to look at that scenario and draw the line somewhere.”

He went on to say that if there are more people in the Virgin Islands that are unemployed than ever before, “then we cannot continue to increase the number of persons coming to the territory.”

“For some people who are not from here being employed and those who are from here, can’t get an answer to an application, is something that I am concerned about.”

For this situation to change, he proposed that the government must find a number of ways to raise the employment level in the Virgin Islands.

“We talk about the cruise ship development, we have legitimate concerns for members of the public, but there are opportunities out there with that particular development…In regards to the airport extension and expansion, there are number of job opportunities there.”

He said “we need to be proactive, we need to get our people employed… we need to get people involved in entrepreneurial opportunities.”

Please Please let Hon. Pickering do his job. I know he is quite capable.
Its an honor to be in that position, and fullfill it with the greatest humility. Remember where you came from, because your parents i'm sure at one time had to get work permit and now look at you today!
