We must not pull down each other’s efforts – Hon. Fahie
“We must understand that if we are going to build this great little nation, let us not put down one another to build up ourselves, let us make sure that we respect the efforts of others and when you respect that, process can move forward,” Hon. Fahie charged.
According to the former education minister, the best way to do anything is to continue to build on what was met. “The good you meet, you continue to build. You could set your programmes and set your house in order how you want to see it...but to shove back the work of anybody before Madam Speaker is not wise because in the opening of the House when we sworn in I mentioned four things the people of the 1st district taught me. If destruction is your motivation, your motivation becomes your destruction. Madam Speaker, these are lessons I have learned and today if it’s for me to relearn them or for me to be enforce on them I pass them on to my Honourable colleagues,” the 1st district representative stated.
Whether it was a subtle sweep at the new Minister, Hon. Mryon Walwyn’s statement on December 19, 2011 on the education system, is anyone’s guess. Hon. Walwyn had stated that maintenance in the schools is a problem. “My recent visits to some of our schools have highlighted a number of issues. Neglect Madam Speaker have led to very poor physical facilities and Madam Speaker it is important for the teaching and learning process to have our teachers and students in safe and comfortable environments. This must be an area of priority going forward into the New Year Madam Speaker,” Walwyn had declared.
However, the 1st district representative pointed out that maintenance of schools is an on-going process. He gave an example of the refurbishing of the Elmore Stoutt High School bathrooms in the summer of 2010 where “you could have eaten off the floor” but said by January of the following year, it was a sight to behold.“We could not imagine it was the same bathroom,” Hon. Fahie added.
