ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- She was not born in the Virgin Islands but yet Virgin Islanders rooted for her on X Factor USA as if she was one of them and Melanie Amaro herself had said on television that she had strong roots in the Virgin Islands and sees herself as a Virgin Islander.

So what’s the fuss about? Well, the public embracing of Amaro, including Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith has sparked some debate, at least among bloggers and public activist Donald deCastro. Among the criticisms, especially among bloggers are whether it was right to embrace Amaro as a VIslander and if she was from another country such as Jamaica or Guyana, whether she would have been embraced in a similar fashion.

Speaking on his new radio show ‘Straight Talk’ on Tuesday January 10, 2012, Mr. deCastro also questioned whether it was right to embrace Amaro in the way it was done as she is not a Virgin Islander since she does not have birth rights. Amaro was born in Florida but spent some of her childhood years on Tortola, where she has a number of relatives.

One of the guests on the programme, Bertrand Lettsome, made it clear, however, that the Virgin Islands did not claim Amaro but rather Amaro claimed the Virgin Islands and the people responded accordingly. He also said that there are many persons who were not born in the Virgin Islands but claim it as their country. “We are a very embracing people as it is a part of our culture and it is very easy for people to feel a part of these Virgin Islands.”

Douglas Wheatley added that people always look for positive persons to embrace and that the situation was no different in the Virgin Islands. He backed up his statement by asking if the person that killed John F. Kennedy was from the Virgin Islands whether the people would have been keen to claim him as a Virgin Islander.

Meanwhile, Premier and Minister for Tourism Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE in a telephone conversation recently, congratulated Ms. Melanie Amaro on her splendid performance in winning X-Factor along with a $5M recording contract and said, “You have made the Government and people of these Virgin Islands extremely proud. We were "rooting for you from day one; we were admiring your progress; all hands were on deck voting for you each week, Melanie; we had thrust our weight behind you 110 percent because we wanted you to win.”

The Premier also told Ms. Amaro that on December 22 many came together and joined with her family at UP‟s Cineplex for a „Let‟s Go Melanie‟ Watch Party. “We were intrigued with your poise, grace, humility and the strength of your voice,” he said, adding, “You are an inspiration to us all and we are so proud of you, so much that December 23 was declared „Melanie Amaro Day‟.”

Premier Smith had also asked Ms. Amaro to put the Virgin Islands high on her priority list of places to visit stating, “The invitation extended along with a stay at one of the Territory’s flag ship properties are compliments the Government and people of the Virgin Islands.”

Tha mean alotta we don't need embracing? Come on Mr. Decastro, how many of us Born in St.Thomas even Puerto Rico and grew up in Tortola, live in Tortola, own a BVI passport and when asked where you from you will more than likely here "I BORN ROCK BUT I FROM TOLA", it's the same with Miss Amaro, she only born in Florida but grew up here, i'm sure if you were to ask her she knows more about Tortola than Florida. Strupesss

So true - how many "BVIslanders" actually born St Thomas, Puerto Rico and other places. Kenya loves Barack Obama like one of their own, even if he was born Hawaii. What is wrong with showing this girl some love just because she was not born at Peebles?

I agree with yep half of my relatives and friends were born between St. Thomas, the US Mainland and PR and see themselves as Tolians whats your problem? Leave the young lady and find more meaningful topics to discuss.

"We are a very embracing people as it is a part of our culture and it is very easy for people to feel a part of these Virgin Islands.”......................REALLY??? I've been living in the BVI for over 16yrs and all i'm hearing is Non-belongers this and Non-belongers that. The governments here make it so hard for us non-belongers to feel welcomed in this country soemtimes. One recent example is, for a non-belonger to have a BVI drivers license he/she should have a valid work permit. you driving in a country have to do with a work permit?? You need to have a specific amount of immigration time allot to you in order for you to have a drivers license. That to me is pure NONSENSE!! My parents are both retired and do not live here everyday however they own a house here and every year they spend atleast 3-4months in the BVI and now license department telling them that they can't renew they're drivers license because they need a work permit or an exemption. So basically this means that they can't drive legally on the road. Why do they need to get a work permit to be able to drive on the island and live in the house that they own? They've had a drivers license for years and now they can't have it renewd. PURE NONSENSE!!!

Its true. They have suddenly introduced a regulation saying to people who have owned houses here for 20 years or more that they are VISITORS and can only drive on a temporary licence which they have to renew every month. Its madness! Where do these "laws" come from?

I’ve read many comments, on this issue of where Melanie is from, many from non BVI islanders whose feelings have been hurt because they believe they have not been accepted by BV islanders as manifested in comments such as non-belongers or “island people.” As reported in The Virgin Island News on 12/13/11 news article, Melanie did claim the BVI as indicated in her statement to Dr. Smith “I love the BVI, it is my home. I will definitely promote the BVI. When people ask me where I am from, I am always proud to tell them I am from the BVI;” Some standard questions I ask when interviewing patients are: “Where were you born?” Where did you grow up?” “Where do you currently reside?” and “Where do you consider home?” these questions are asked because it is important for both me and my patients that I understand how they identify themselves, not how I want to identify them. It is obvious from Melanie’s comment that she is fully aware of all these questions and has made the decision as to where she calls home. Likewise, my daughter was born and raised in the United States; however, when she is asked where she is from she tells people that she is from the Virgin Islands. Now the only thing my daughter knows about the Virgin Islands is what I have taught her and what she has learned in the very few visits she has made there over the years. For me, although I have resided abroad for some time, Tortola is and will always be my primary home and NY my second home. At present I reside in another state which I would never call home. Trying to understand Melanie’s situation you would have to understand some things about one’s identity. Melanie is not allowing others to identify who she is she is telling you what she considers one of the important aspects of her identity. Like Melanie, my daughter has identified being a BV Islander as an important part of her identity. For the people who say she wasn’t born there, she was born in Florida or her parents aren’t from there, you have disregarded the most important aspect of considering one’s identity that is how the individual sees him or herself. How does he or she identify his or herself; Not how we want to identify them, but how they identify themselves. Essentially, Mr. Lettsome is correct when he says that “the Virgin Islands did not claim Amaro but rather Amaro claimed the Virgin Islands and the people responded accordingly.” As the saying goes, "home is where the heart is."

If MR Lettsome had did his homework he would have discovered that Miss Amaro does have Virgin Island heritage. Her grandmother on her father side is from Tortola. She is the older sister of Milton and Gene Creque. Due to marrige her last name is now Amaro. She is the mother of Melanie's father. So yes both the Virgin Islands and Melanie can claim here rightfully. Hell she can even hold public office here.

Hear, hear Mr. Lettsome! I couldn’t agree with you more. HOME is where the heart is People people it looks like you guys can't read!! Mr Lettsome! did nothing wrong! is Decastro who came with this whole crap. Mr Lettsome just make it clear to him how things happend, if you actually read or actually heard him on the radio he was defading us and Melanie but Decastro was kind of jelous of this girl {Melanie} is a shame!! I think he had nothing else to talk on the radio so he picked on the girl and I think it was great that she claim the BVI I was in her school and trust me she did not had the best treatment here. she was called all kind of name all the time and ppl used tell her ugly and stuff like that because she was "white" and but white in " " cause she's actually clear skin but whatever the thing is this man should just shut the heck up. and other thing. He said that someone who was born outside the B.V.I do not have the same right as a virgin islanders. This statement is a lie cause I know for fact that if anyone who don't have paper from here have a child here the child can't get their passport! there for the child would not have any right while someone who was born ouside but have parent from here they can actually have their passport one time and have more right than a kid that actually born here but his parents are not from here.

Personally I was born in St. Thomas but I have been living in Tortola from the time I was two (2) days old. When people ask me where I'm from I tell them Tortola. As close as St. Thomas is to Tortola. I don't even care to sleep in that place. My parents and grand parents (deceased) are/were all from TORTOLA. I have claimed Tortola as my home a very long time ago. I don't see the big issue of whether Melanie claimed us or we claimed Melanie. She lived most of her life in Tortola. She has relatives right here in Tortola. I think it's time we as BVIslanders/Belongers/Residents stop all the bickering and back biting of who born here and who aint from here and live together as one community. We have to make the difference that we want to see in our community.

Really, something is wrong with what you are saying, because tourist come here everyday and rent vehicle and drive on the road. Since your parents do not live here, what they need his a temporary license. I agree with DMV, this is a way to check that people are in the territory legally. This is not a new concept, you can't just go to the US and just obtain a driver's license.
