ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - While calling for Virgin Islanders to come out of social isolation, former talk show host, entrepreneur and tourism operator, Mr Julio S. Henry aka 'Sam' has praised the Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) administration for its handling of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the Virgin Islands (VI).

"The BVI government has done a remarkable job thus far managing this global pandemic, which is likely to be a part of our life for years to come; therefore learning how to manage, mitigate and protect ourselves for the future... is necessary on all levels."

Mr Henry was at the time speaking in a May 7, 2020, statement released to the local media where he also urged the ruling administration to get the tourism business up and running with urgency, in order to mitigate any economic backlash.

However, while he praised the administration for its bold moves, Mr Henry said that it is time the people of the territory get reacquainted with the environment and get used to COVID-19 as a part of life.

VI must prepare self - Henry

"We must re-introduce ourselves to the environment in order to better prepare ourselves and immune systems. We cannot and should not isolate ourselves from the world [for] too long."

Henry said facing the pandemic has strengthened the VI as a people, but at the same, it has highlighted weaknesses.

"These grey areas will allow us to develop reliable ways and measures to strengthen our economy, our people, our environment, and our society."

He also called for dialogue between stakeholders and Government to plan and execute the territory's reopening to the tourism market.

FALSE CLAIM: The flu vaccine causes the new coronavirus

For all links where it mentions (here) the main article is at https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-flu-vaccine-causes-new-coro/false-claim-the-flu-vaccine-causes-the-new-coronavirus-idUSKCN21X2LT

Social media users have been sharing an image online that claims the flu vaccine causes respiratory issues “including 4 strains of coronavirus” ( here ).

      THIS CLAIM IS FALSE.

Flu vaccines are derived from influenza viruses. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu shots (given with a needle) are made in two ways.

The first is by using flu viruses that have been ‘inactivated’ (killed) and are therefore are not infectious. The second is by using a single gene from a flu virus (as opposed to the full virus) in order to produce an immune response without causing infection. ( here )

The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes the disease COVID-19 is not an influenza virus. Coronaviruses are a different family of virus named after their crown-like shape. ( here )

The CDC says: "Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in people and many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats.  Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people. This occurred with MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV, and now with the virus that causes COVID-19." ( here )

John Hopkins Medicine also notes on its website that COVID-19 is "caused by one virus, the novel 2019 coronavirus, now called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, or SARS-CoV-2" while the flu is caused by several different strains of the influenza virus. ( here )

In short, it is not possible for COVID-19 to be caused by a vaccine derived from an unrelated flu virus. Scientists believe the novel coronavirus reached humans via animals.

      VERDICT

FALSE CLAIM: The influenza vaccine does not cause COVID-19

Thank God that the majority of people in the world are taking this epidemic seriously or much more people would be dead. Only devils would get inside someone’s head and persuade them that this is all a conspiracy. ‘It is the devils nature, to take man off the face of the earth.’ I thank Jesus that Sam and others like him are not leaders of nations, they would surely destroy their nations for greed!

This is how we know that Jesus is, and remains always, in control of all things!!!

Those in corona infested countries going be to seeking refuge in countries that have low infection rate. They gonna bring it with them. Remember this virus is imported. How long will it linger on beds and hotel environments. Invite a few to your home and let them travel on your plane then let's test you after 14 days and see how it ah go down. Make yourself the guinea pig for BVI and we will allow them in according to the results. See how.much dead people could spend

Stay out of things that don’t concern you, you are just looking at the $$$$$ aspect. Money is not everything. Even if the boarders is open for business, the tourist is not coming at this time. The BVI boarders should only be open for food to get in and other needed essentials.

“We cannot and should not isolate ourselves from the world [for] too long." Ditto. Covid-19 kills. It kills Boomers, Gen X, Millennials/Gen Y, IGen/Centennials and the youngest among us. Thus far, 3,965,863 people have contracted the disease and 275,527 have succumbed to the disease. There are no standard treatment protocols, no cure and no vaccines. The best management practice is to mitigate, ie, social/physical distancing, quarantining, isolation........etc. It is not a stretch to assert that the quick, draconian measures by the VIP government has so far kept the confirmation cases and deaths low, albeit the VI has only conducted approx 132 tests, ie, shutting down cruise ship visits, closing the border, sheltering in place, locking down.......etc. What is next?

VI residents is demonstrating a thirst and a hunger (not literally) and an eagerness to return to work. Understand the need for people to return to work to meet their familial responsibilities. Nonetheless, the return to work must be done relatively quickly but deliberately, carefully and safely. A poorly executed return to work process can result in more lockdowns. Residents health, the national health must come first. It is a false choice to have choose between health or the economy; a delicate balance must be struck. Nevertheless, health must take precedence over the economy. A death is gone forever; the economy will in time recover. Should the VI take herd immunity route? To me, not at this point.

“.........where he also urged the ruling administration to get the tourism business up and running with urgency, in order to mitigate any economic backlash.” True, tourism is a key economic component and most tourist arrive from the US. Fellow commenter, E. Leonard, in a comment on another Julio Henry comment stated why the VI should train its eyes on the US relative to tourism. IMO VI residents should not expect a quick return to the economy level that they had experienced prior to the Coronavirus pandemic.

True everyone wants everything open up, ie, border, airport, seaport, businesses....etc so that they can return to work to provide for shelter, clothing and folding. The Coronavirus is an imported disease that is spread from person to person and of yet there are no evidence of community spread. Yes, the VI has few confirmed cases and deaths, 7 and 1, respectively, but the VI must be conscious and cautious of a rekindling, ie, lockdowns....etc. Health and safety first before reopening.

[Lets lead as eagles, not careen off the cliff like buffaloes]

Oh so true. We have to get out the mindset of self and understand that businesses have to examine a number of factors including health and safety. Can't be full speed ahead without the proper protocols in place to continue business.

For our protection, when they start allowing tourists to come in, I hope they cannot disembark the vessels they came on, without wearing a mask. No mask, no entry, period. We have been one of the lucky places that have low Virus infection. Do not allow outsiders make our numbers go higher. If it does, we have to shut down again, but I hope it would not be too late to recover. This is my opinion just as everyone else has theirs, so no name calling please. This is our home we must protect!

This is been my position..Open up tomorrow or open up next year the challenges are going to be the same.. We have to put the same necessary health safety measures in place... Open up tomorrow or mext year will not be perfect or any guarantee.. We just have to adjust as we go along.. So, Means the sooner we open up the better we position ourselves for the future..I understand the region governmens trying to work as one on this as mandated by WHO.. We all no WHO credibility is in doubt.. What I foresee is a race to the finish line by caribbean countries to see who be the first to get tourist and get the most... So, I think Sam is onto something...
