ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Amidst all the hiring and firing and bickering about “who from here” and who are “not from here”, the Association of Jamaican Residents (BVI) is organising a fun day on July 1, 2013 that creates a perfect opportunity for persons to set all their differences aside and show the “one love” that the legendary Jamaican reggae artiste Bob Marley sang about many years ago.

The event dubbed ‘Fun in the Sun’ will be held at Oceans Seven on Peter Island and is open to persons of any nationality. While on the island, persons could involve themselves in games, a Caribbean quiz, dance and swimming competitions, among other activities.

According to Entertainment Chairman of the Association of Jamaican Residents (BVI), Mr Ziggy Effion Lewis, last year was a “blast” with more than a hundred persons in attendance and this year the association is expecting more.

“At this event, all of us come together to share our different cultures, dances, games and to interact as one people. Sometimes we are seen as Jamaicans, Guyanese or Tolans but really and truly we are one people,” Mr Lewis told Virgin Islands News Online.

Meanwhile, the ‘Fun in the Sun’ begins at 9 A.M. and concludes at 5 P.M. A ferry will depart the Road Town ferry dock at 9:20 A.M. The boat ride is considered free but according to Lewis, “we are asking for a contribution of $5 to help offset the ferry cost...the cost for lunch will also be kept at an affordable price and will range from $ 5 to $15.”

Persons wishing further information can contact the Association of Jamaican Residents (BVI) on 343-9743.

“The event is not only for Jamaicans, everyone is invited,” Mr Lewis emphasised.

We are not all one. This is our house and you are invited guests who came and stripped us of our identity, our jobs, and lord knows what else. What other country reciprocates for the benefits you people get here. You all were happy when we had our heads in the sand and now you want to silence us as soon as we have found our voice. To the labour department where are the statistics on ratios in the public and private sectors. How many natives are hired not married in and belonger card holder NATIVES. It is astounding and shameful. Well actually we may very well be one. That is like one native vilander to every 10 jamacians etc

-__-.. Shut up.. When natives go to school, attain a degree and graduate who will deny them job? You are never entitled to ANYTHING in this world you EARN it. Most people have the ridiculous mentality that all non- natives are less than. When some of them have more rights to a position because of their education than the people who hold it. Stop bickering, make a way for yourself and stop waiting for sh*t to be handed to you.

we are most definitely NOT one people! Jamaicans can well afford to kick up and fete since they are still employed but we BVIslanders who have been laid off with no support from our Labour Department must sit home and suck salt.

    In. Our. Own. Country.

I can tell you that the Jamaicans are great people.
They certainly know how to treat people in a tourist area.
I know this because after living on many different Caribbean
Islands, I have always found that the friendliest people were
    Jamaicans who work there.

This is an excellent way to celebrate Territory Day. :-)

But why would they inviting everyone to their jam down session when we have a National celebration for Territory Day planned by the Government. The first of it's kind. To me this is BALTANT DISRESPECT OF OUR CULTURE in our country where we allow individuals to come and live amongst us. This action says that 'we don't care about you all and your culture we will do what we want to do anyway'.

As a jamaican, i was taught that " out of many, we are one" this message is one of love. Culturally we embrace everyone. That is why you'll find Chinese, indian, arab and Caucasian jamaicans. I can understand why you feel disrespected but are the rest us invited to join in the celebrations. I have lived in a few caribbean countries and i find it sad that we try so hard to separate ourselves from each other when the rest of the world sees us as one "afro-caribbean". Across the diaspora all we need is love and unity. Look and the EU why can't we as smarter people work things out and unit. Not to loose yourselves culturally but rather to work together to make life better for all of us. Just an observation; its not the caribbean people who are causing the cultural decay; look further north!
