We are destroying each other with blogs – Hon. Walwyn

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – During the Other Business segment of yesterday’s September 3, 2012 first sitting of the Second Session of the Second House of Assembly, Minister for Education and Culture Myron V. Walwyn once more expressed grave concern about the way online news sites represented the information that was gathered.

The Hon. Minister had previously expressed concerns in the last sitting of the House of Assembly in July about the need for censorhip with online news sites.

Again, the Minister did not single out a specific news site but said, “I won’t be naïve to say that news sites must write stories the same way.”

“No!” he continued, “Because you can give me a statement and I could write it from a particular angle to bring out something that I want, but I’m not lying.”

Walwyn expressed that he, “would be clever enough or crafty enough to put the statement or write the article in a particular way to get the [meaning] that [he] want[s].”

“When you go and deliberately misrepresent the facts and tell lies and deceive the public… I have a problem, Madam Speaker.” He declared.

The Hon. Minister related some incidents that he felt was misrepresented including one involving visiting CXC representatives in which he was directly involved.

“The Ministry depends on the media, to give us information,” Walwyn continued, “…from whatever [angle] you take your story from make sure that there is truth in the content that you’re doing.”

He also touched on the issue of comments/blogs on news sites again.

He expressed that some of them were shameful and questioned why we were doing this to each other in society. “Why are we doing it?” he asked.

He related that while he was on a recent overseas trip the person assigned to him related to him that upon researching him from the local websites she was left with the impression that he was a monster. “The blogs, Minister… the things that I read about you, I thought you were a monster.”

Walwyn expressed to the speaker that “we are destroying each other in this country with these blogs…”

“If I had to stand up by my lonesome in this House and express my disdain for that… I’m not playing politics… it has to stop Madam Speaker.”

“We cannot be destroying each other this way by destroying each other in this country,” Walwyn said.

“We have to call upon the news sites, to edit their blogs!” he exclaimed.

“I am not [afraid], I am standing here by myself, I am saying Madam Speaker, it has got to stop.”

Hon. Walwyn felt that as Minister for the subject, he had cause to raise it and called on the media houses to address the issue.

“There are some who are very responsible,” he said, “but there are one or two who need to pull their socks up.”

After he could not get to censor the media as he had no support nowhere in the BVI not even in the NDP, now he wants to censor the blogs.

Why the hick he does not do the people work from spending all day blogging and reading blogs. I could only conclude Myron is a sick puppy!!!

We have to call upon the news sites, to edit their blogs!??? UTTER RUBBISH. It is called freedom of speech and freedom of the press. If the news sites are lying or slandering ...sue them!! Who at these news sites would determine what would be edited? Fox News is biased in the view of most people, if a news site is known to have a particular slant or spin, readers know it or it wil be come apparant down the line. Editing and suggesting that blogs be edited is going down a slipperly slope and should not be tolerated.

Absolutely right. It is freedom of speech - plain and simple. Like most politicians, Myron does not like criticism. But I am afraid it comes with the job. You make decisions, and the public will discuss them and comment on them. It is all part of being a democracy.

I don't he's talking about criticism. I think he's talking about the unnecessary name-calling and statements.. Look at these comments.. "go back Antigua", "myron baldwyn", "old antiguan dictator".. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.. we can discuss, debate and disagree with a lot of things.. but leave the nastiness behind. The impression get when after I read these blogs is bitterness in the people.. Miserable..

It amazes me that Myron is the only on for the last 10 months crying and complaining about the media. What is he trying to prove in a free society? Come on man do the people work form wasting time on this.

The press is free and you cannot do a dam thing about it but send out threats…..

Please Myron, if your going to censor the media then you might as well censor all the social media websites: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc because individuals use these sources to do blogging of their own. If CNN and FOXNEWS, all world reknown newssites do it, then why does our government feel the need to control the media. When VIP was in, and had their own bad press from one particular website, I never heard any talks about controlling what the media is putting out, not once. Myron is too selfish man! Whether this media site or any media puts you in a bad light, it's the blogging by the PEOPLE in general you should worry about.

I agree whole heartedly and commend Myron for standing up! Firstly we need to stop confusing the BRITISH Virgin Islands with the USA. The USA has freedom of speech in their constitution...the BRITISH Virgin Islands does NOT! Secondly, we do have many of these sites that are biased politically. They slant the stories to fit their own personal agendas and are not neutral and simply "reporting the facts". Then we the bloggers dont event take time to investigate the stories. We just believe whatever angle the media put the story out from and we jump on here and start crucifying people. Some of the things we type are damaging to the people personally...damaging people's reputations publicly...without reason. I DO think that the media has a responsibility to read through the blogs and delete posts that are personal attacks or damaging to individual's reputations. We should not be able to sit behind a fake name and call people gay, thieves, dumb, nigger, pedophiles, sell outs, etc. It is NOT right. And I, like Myron, believe that the media has a responsibility to censor some of these comments.

Isn't it untrue and an insult when you state that the BVI does not have freedom of speech? All democracies are supposed to have freedom of speech, but the freedoms and rights are not to infringe on the rights of others. Some people like to cry "foul" when the shoe is on the other foot, when they are slandering other persons' names behind their backs, they don't know that it's hurtful and capable of destroying others. What people don't like for themselves, they should not do to others.

Actually we do, check Article 23 of the Virgin Islands Constitutional Order, freedom of expression also covers freedom of speech:

23.—(1) No person shall be hindered in the enjoyment of his or her freedom of expression.

      (2) A person’s freedom of expression includes freedom to hold opinions without interference, freedom to receive information and ideas without interference, freedom to disseminate information and ideas without interference (whether to the public generally or to any person or class of persons) and freedom from interference with his or her correspondence or other means of communication.

Disrespect is a subjective thing, what is disrespectful to one person might not be disrespectful to another. Myron might find someone telling him that he is wrong, to be disrespectful. Further, you telling others to mind what they say might be very well be seen to be disrespectful, especially when it is a favour of a politician that quite obviously, do not like. I find people that call for censorship of media to be very disrespectful, but I respect their right to say it! At any rate, Myron ought to practice what he preaches lest he faces the public charge of hypocrisy for he has destroyed many people's careers and lives without remorse.

If the facts in these article aren't correct, then I am pretty sure there should be some legal means " Not censorship". However, if some one judged you based on what they read in these blogs, then you are in trouble. blogs are what they are people expressing how they feel/think and we all know you bad and good people, many of them speaking their minds about things they dont have a clue about but feel they have the right to and should have to right to, but by no means would i just take what i read on some blog to be the truth and any one with some sense would do the same...

By No means should there be any form off sensorship!!!!!!!! Do your Job do it well and you will be just fine, your work will speak for itself!!!!!!!

The Honorable Walwyn needs to focus on improving the level, quality and value of primary, secondary, and tertiary education in the BVI. Further, freedom of speech and freedom of the press are hallmarks of any democracy. Both have limits, of course. The laws of the BVI does not protect false speech that is likely to cause immediate harm to others. Individuals or organizations can be sued for libel and slander. If libel and slander is occuring, the harmed individuals or organizations can. File suit to be made whole. And the Honorable Walwyn as a jurist knows this.

John Emmerich Edward. Dalberg Acton (Lord Acton),historian and moralist, is credited with the expresssion: power corrupts; absolutely power corrupts absolutely. Let freedom of speech and freedom of speech reign. The press plays a crucial role in safeguarding individual liberty; the case for a free press is intrinsic to the case for free speech. Politicians often despise the press, for it is one of the press' role to scrutinise and criticise government activities. Conversely, politicians also favour positive press.

I personally like Mr. Walwyn as a politician. He has confidence in what he's doing and a lot of people deem it arrogance. But most of you commenting are misunderstanding the message he was trying to get across. We can voice our opinion, we can disagree, criticize and we can debate, but do so while respecting each other. It looks really bad to come on to these blog sites and see the nasty things people say on here. It makes us look like a bitter people. The constant bashing needs to stop.

Once again you people making this a political issue regardless of the facts. Most news organizations around the world are extremely careful of what they allow on their comment sections because if they carry defamatory, slanderous or otherwise damaging comments, they are legally liable. In the BVI that doesn't seem to apply. To those who say there must be 'some legal means' of redress if you think someone slandering you - yes, but the cost of that legal action will be so disproportionate that to chase every one of you who saying Walwyn this and Walwyn that is prohibitive, so it's not practical at all. To all you saying he wants to 'censor the media' and take away free speech - I don't see it in what he actually said. He said the comments (mis-named 'blogs' in the BVI for some reason - blogs are 'web logs' which are updated pages written by individuals or groups regularly, usually relating to a certain subject or activity. These are 'comments' in a 'comments section') are doing damage to our society and I agree. All this name calling, all this hatred. True maybe they just show us how some people always felt all along, but still, they create their own momentum and are clearly damaging and dividing our culture. If you weren't from here and you look at these kind of pages you'd think this is a nation full of hateful people. We just got to hope that the tourism industry doesn't latch onto these comments sections because if I was a tourist thinking of going on holiday here and I saw the nastiness all you people throwing around at each other, plus the xenophobia and racism these islands have for outsiders, I know I would go somewhere else.
These news sites need to have moderators to protect them from potential legal issues arising from these comments. Asking for our email address and throwing responsibility to the writer is not enough. You broadcast libel and slander, you promote hatred and division in the public media - you should be liable like in most countries of the world.

How I see it, blogging on a news site is a way of the people anonymously venting their frustrations about different topics. Of course the news site will have a special address for each individual who do blog, so it's not actually all to private. The thing is, no one can feel comfortable to publicly speak on certain matters without facing some kind of victimization. As we have all witnessed, if your not proNDP then you are sure to be victimized. Your either ousted from your jobs (some civil servants), ignored with projects (opposition) or either without a job or abused in your capacity (some die-hard VIP supporters and civil
Servants and people related to the aforementioned. I see potential in our people, but I also see division in our society. VINO, strength (the people) are behind you. Keep PRESSING on!!!
