ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool continued to hit at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) headed by Opposition VIP Leader Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal OBE when he and several others signed the $30.7ML contract for the moving ahead of the Cruise Pier Development Project.

It was during the occasion of the signing ceremony on April 22, 2014 where reporters were given a few minutes to ask questions of persons at the head table. Minister Vanterpool was asked whether he had a clear conscience that he has done everything correctly as it relates to moving ahead with the project and that there would be nothing untoward coming up in the House by the Standing Finance Committee.

He said that he did mention during the most recent sitting of the House of Assembly that the Auditor General’s office has their work to do and whenever an investigation has to be done they have to be supported.

He however noted, “When the Public Accounts Committee has to investigate they are doing their work in a sense… obviously if they had something untoward that they are not happy with, their job is to bring it forward, they have brought some forward, [which] turned out to be unsubstantiated.”

According to the Minister if the committee has something that can be substantiated he would be happy to hear it. “So we look forward to that if that is the case but in the meantime we are breaking ground, we had to do it.”

Hon Vanterpool was very emphatic that his conscience was clear but also took a swipe at the Standing Finance Committee.

“You use the word clear conscience! My conscience is very clear, very comfortable and very pleased that we reached thus far,” said Hon Vanterpool as he moved to thank the Ministry of Finance, the Port Authority’s Board of Directors and his team in the Ministry of Communications and Works.

I wonder if the Audit had been made public earlier if the people could have argued it for the PAC. I am disappointed that more time hadn't been put into refuting statements to move forward rather aggressively instead of calming the questions about this huge project championed by a guy who lost out on Raffles in Lambert. I do not trust him at all. There should be a moratorium on the pier project until questions are answered. Mark my words, after it gets started something irregular will come to light... and this is what happens in the BVI. And no one goes to jail. He is a bully.

It always bothered me that the minister says "we will listen to the people, but we will no be deterred from our goals". Now he says if something can be substantiated he would be happy to hear it. "but in the meantime we are breaking ground..." He has not learned or considered anything when it comes to public respect, the audit and problem-solving. He is a bulldozer with no listening skills. His conscience is clear because he has none and is getting his way. This will come back to bite him and I hope it does. Impetuous child.

dock maybe. But not the 2000-4000 people a day or the landside development the way it is now.
