ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Head of the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) Sharleen S. DaBreo is warning that the inclement weather is set to continue as a result of a deep trough that remains in place and said that persons should continue to take precaution as similar conditions as yesterday October 25, 2015 will continue today October 26, 2015.

Speaking with this news site today, DaBreo said, “There is a deep trough still in place. There will be similar conditions throughout the today.”

However, she pointed out that the conditions being seen and felt have nothing to do with the tropical storm Patricia which bore down on Mexico over the weekend.

Conditions to be maintained over next 24 hours

In its daily weather report, the DDM said that the presence of a deep layered trough coupled with light winds and daytime heating will maintain an unstable atmosphere across the area over the next 24 hours.

“Partly cloudy skies initially becoming increasingly cloudy later this morning into the afternoon with some localized afternoon showers, some of which could be moderate to locally heavy at times accompanied by isolated thunderstorms. Expect partly cloudy skies tonight with some widely scattered evening showers developing,”

Rains lashed the territory today leading to the usual scenarios of rocks coming loose from the hillsides and causing drivers to have to manoeuvre their way through them for fear of vehicle damage.

'Turn around. Don’t drown'

The DDM last evening issued a flash flood watch for the territory, saying that conditions may develop that lead to moderate to major flooding in low lying and flood prone areas and that some houses in these areas may require evacuation.

“Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and move to higher ground if flash flooding is observed or imminent or if a flash flood warning has been issued,” it said. “When encountering flooded roads be extremely cautious, and if in doubt, make the smart choice, turn around, don’t drown. Move to higher ground,” said the DDM.
