NORTH SOUND, Virgin Gorda, VI – The atmosphere was one of a closely knitted family gathering in one place with the special presence of some significant persons, at the Bitter End Yacht Club (BEYC) on Saturday night January 1, 2014 for the occasion of the resort’s annual Service Star Awards.

With much of fellowship and ‘swallow-ship’, the award ceremony was seen as only one of the ways the owners and management of Bitter End show how much its family members are valued and appreciated.

Some 23 years ago, vision, appreciation and realization came together and created the Service Star Awards and according to BEYC Director of Human Resources Ms Delores I. Creque, the event has been in existence for almost as long as this resort has been opened.

“This, I must say is quite significant, because when everything boils down, when you strip tourism down to the nuts and bolts, Hotels, Resorts, Yacht Clubs and all such service establishments are only as good as two things: The infrastructure and environment and the Human Resources – The staff. These are the engines that make things happen,” stated Ms Creque.

She further stated, “Once buildings are erected and walls are painted, that only makes a structure or house, but it is the people that make those structures a home for our guests. Bitter End is not just a home, but it is its own community. I am proud to be a member of the best family anyone can have- The Bitter End family.”

With the celebrating of the ‘family’s’ accomplishments Mr Warren George, 79 years old, was honoured as BEYC lifetime achievement awardee. He received the Myron & Bernice Hokin Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award and was highly spoken of in his absence.

That that was not the only award for the night, Mr Kinto Sprauve and Mr. Warren George were name the service stars for the year for 2013 representing employee for front of the house and back of the house respectively. Mr. George was not on hand to receive his awards.

Mr. Roderick Beazer received the service star award as being the supervisor of the year 2013.

Several others were also awarded from being service stars for their respective departments for each month of 2013 and it was of that group the two Service Stars of the year were selected.

In giving a background to the even and BEYC Ms. Creque noted that when the late Myron Hokin, who was one of the founding members Of Bitter End bought the establishment back in the early 1970s, he said that he had bought it to help the people of Virgin Gorda and believe it or not, the Bitter End Today, boasts generations of families of over 185 employees not just From Virgin Gorda but from every island in the Caribbean and across the world.

“We have had and still have mothers, fathers, children, grandchildren and great Grandchildren on our staff. These are the ties that bind the Bitter End family together, these are the ties that we are here to celebrate this evening and these are the kind of success stories that create our Service Stars,” she further stated.

First lady of the Virgin Islands Ms Lorna Smith was the guest of honour who in brief remarks acknowledged the contributions of the resort over the years in being one that contributed to the building of the territory on several ways.

She also had much word of congratulations to the Service Star winners. “Congratulations to each of you on your achievement. I know it only came as a result of your hard work, your commitment to Bitter End, and with some degree of sacrifice,” she said.

Among the other guest present were Mr. Richard and Wife Wendy Hokin, present owners, Mr. Peter Brill and wife Swazek, Bitter End’s Architect, Mr. Sallah and wife Hon. Dancia Penn-Sallah, Pastor Greg George and wife, Churchof God Holiness who did the Invocation, Pastor Steve Turnbull and wife, church of God Prophecy, Ms. Norma Creque, Principal of R.O.M.P.S, Bitter End’s adopted school and students who rendered the National Anthem and territorial song, Ms. Natasha Chalwell and Ms. Victorene Creque-Alexander from BVI Tourist Board, Mr. Anthony Winchester from BVI Fire and Rescue and Ms. Zelda George, Former Executive Housekeeper BEYC.
