‘Walwyn's reason for VG b'ball cancellation quite erroneous!’ - Rajah A. Smith

NOTTINGHAM ESTATE, Tortola, VI – “I think that the Minister's (Hon Myron V. Walwyn) statement was incorrect, inaccurate and quite erroneous,"‎ said Rajah A. Smith, Commissioner for the Honourable Julian Fraser Save The Seed National Basketball League.

This issue arose following a recent article on this news site in which the Minister is quoted as saying that the Virgin Gorda ‘Summer Jam’ Basketball League was postponed because players and referees were tied up participating in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League which took place from mid-August to early November.

This news site had been told earlier by organiser of the Virgin Gorda Summer Jam Trevor 'West' Stevens that the non-completion of the basketball facility on Virgin Gorda was the reason for the delay in the start of the Virgin Gorda League.

In attempting to cover shame from his face the Hon Minister blatantly cast the blame on the heels of the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League but this did not go down too lightly with those who knew the truth and who knew the Minister's excuse was a departure from the truth.

In giving the facts Mr Smith said that way before their league had started a combined meeting was held between the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League, BVI Basketball Federation (BVIBF) and the Virgin Gorda Basketball League 'Summer Jam' committee and one of the things that was agreed on was that the three leagues would have been scheduled and executed in such a manner as not to interfere with each other.

Mr Smith recalled that what was arrived at was a basketball calendar which once followed would have seen one starting when the other would have finished.

This calendar set saw the season starting with the BVI Basketball Federation League, followed by the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League and the Virgin Gorda League should have immediately followed.

"Mr Malone (Guy L. Malone) finished his league around August 12th or 13th or the week before and we kicked off on August 15th, and we had to finish by November 2nd that's the time I think the Representative from Virgin Gorda agreed was OK for him to start his league," said Mr Smith.

According to Mr Smith the Virgin Gorda organizers were at that time comfortable with the calendar. "‎It seemed that the new facility would have been built at that time. I don't know where they got their information that it would have been finished but that's what they said that it would have been finished by then so that they could have kicked off their league and they would have called it the Winter Jam," recalled Mr Smith.

"So I don't know how the Minister could have say the referees, players, when I think we only had about seven people from Virgin Gorda playing our league…" added Mr Smith.

He said that he vividly recalled that the league for which he is Commissioner and the Virgin Gorda league had their tournaments ongoing at the same time in 2013.

"So I don't think that players would have been a problem. Then again referees, Virgin Gorda had their league going on the same time last year and there were referees refereeing in both leagues ‎ and I think the referee body has quite enough referees that are dispensable to be here and there. They have a huge body,” stated Mr Smith.

He said that from where he stands it was clear that Hon Walwyn was just blowing off some hot air.‎ “I think the Minister just blowing off some hot air trying to distract us from what is. I don't see his reasoning behind trying to blame a basketball league for a next league from taking its course so like I say I thing that he was blowing some hot air.”

I honestly think that BVIBF league should be first then followed by Vg summer jam Then right after the BVIBF league concludes...Early August to mid October the latest and then the save the seed league should follow and go right up to late December early January.

I trust 'West' and Rajah any day over M...n...I must conclude the child is ah sick, sick, sick puppy...

Myron is not lying, a lot of the VG ball players were playing in the Julian Fraser League and some of the Coaches and umpires were down here for most of the games. I saw WES there every time games are played. Anyone who attended those games and are not bias would know he is speaking the truth. Also all the guys who plays up VG from Tortola were on teams in the league.
