football got back on track on sunday with the launch of the 2011 league and the assurance from Myron Walwyn that the Govt. would soon have the field at Greenland re-opened.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Speaking at the BVI Football Association’s opening ceremony of the 2011 Terry Evans League on Sunday November 20, 2011, Minister for Education, Culture and Sports, Hon. Myron Walwyn asserted that Government is committed to having the Greenland Field completed and ready for use.

It was back in June 2009 that the then Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government closed the field almost immediately after the final of the 2009 BVICA/Digicel 2020 Tournament and during the BVIFA’s seven a side tournament.

Initially, no explanation was made public, but then exciting plans were announced for its renovation and improvement including new surface, new drainage, new basketball and netball courts, a newly laid out softball arena and other amenities.

Since then, though, little progress towards completion has been achieved.

“I know football faces some challenges now particularly with facilities. The Greenland’s field has been an area of much pain. We promise under our new administration that we will get the Greenland’s field up and running in very short order,” stated Walwyn.

“So you can have somewhere to practice. We recognize the Virgin Islands are a melting pot of people from all walks of life and we must provide recreational facilities. Football and cricket will not be on the back burner. We will try our best to get the field going and also look for other sites for you.”

The field has been graded and new lights and drainage were installed before the project stalled - not for the first time.

It remains unclear as to exactly what extent of the project will be completed, but either way the re-opening will be highly anticipated not only by Football and Cricket fans, but Softball, Basketball and Netball as well. Not to mention the many residents of the area that used it for recreational purposes and the school children of Francis Lettsome Primary.

Meanwhile, the opening ceremony of the football league was attended by the Acting Governor, Inez Achibald; Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Mark Vanterpool; the Acting Director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Patrick Harrigan and the new BVIFA President, Andy Bickerton, as well as, other members of the Association’s executive body.

The Ceremony was highlighted by a march past of teams followed by an exhibition match between the National U20 Girls' team and the Boys' U15 team with the U15 boys coming away with a 1 nil victory.

sun hot and you talking bout shades not appropriate....so you prefer to see a minister squinting under the sun. Anyway that aside, renovating and re-opening Greenland field will be one of the best moves that this new Government can make.

"TO MMM" The shades wearing is nether here or there with me! The NDP has their advisors from overseas to advise them on everything, so I am sure they will teach him how to dress in public as a Government man. But I support Myron opening up the Greenland field…take notes Dancia BAM that!

It was always going to open. What I want to know is what was the delay! I am thinking Hon. Walwyn will state that soon.

Myron you can wear as many shades as you want. What the hell is this? All we should be concern about right now is if he is getting the job done and if he is, to hell with the shades. People always look at the most pity things to comment about.

Shades is not a big deal that is so petty. Nothing is wrong with the shades. What if he had glasses that tinted in the sun I guess you would have said they are not appropriate too. Struuupes.

It is sad when we have to comment on sun shades. Why close a recreation ground down and you know you do not have the monies to complete the work. Wait until you have the finances before you start. At least the Youths will have some place to go rather than on the street. Let us say things to the Government so they can see what needs to be done, they do not know all and will be happy to get some input. Sports is going to the next level so let us keep it there. At least this government is coming out the past minister did not care whether it went from good to great, so let us be constructive now. This is our-beloved BVI let us help it grow. There is a higher authority than us let us remember this, for all who want to do wrong.
